GTX 1650 to replace my GT1030 dinosaur

Personally I’d buy a used GTX 1660 Super instead of a GTX 1650. But if you have to build with a 300W power supply (which I recommend against doing), then a GTX 1650 is your only option really.

curious as to why the op wont just upgrade the power supply first…

OP probably has an office machine prebuilt that came with the 300W PSU, and is hoping to fit a GPU into whatever prebuilt chassis they have. Upgrading a PSU isn’t always possible with those kind of machines.

I dont see the problem.
I played wow on this new monitor for hours last evening with my GT 1030 still in the machine. looking at the video comparisons, it seems the 1650 can be expected to double or triple my FPS on the 1030, so if Im able to play, his wife certainly should be able to.

" Radeon RX 6950 XT - On your average system we recommend a 750 Watt power supply unit."

I have no intention of putting a 750 watt PS in a 5 year old computer.
I have to stick to cards that work with a 300watt PS.
When we upgrade machines next time, I’ll look for something with more power.

Definitely saw an FPS drop, but I got the settings figured out so Im doing better now.
Particles being maxxed out was ok with my narrow monitor, but that vapor trail when dragon riding is actually a bit noticeable now with the wider monitor.
dropping down the particles a bit seems to have fixed it.

Right.
If the computer were a couple years old, sure. I’ll go check out more upgrades.
but we bought these machines not to long after starting to play WOW…so end of 2017 or early 2018…I’ll have to track down the receipts.
When we upgrade next time I might get a little more nuts than usual.
Im the cheapest human being alive, lol.
I mean, theres about $12k in ‘cash’ around the place here and because I got sloppy we have way more cash in the bank accounts than ever because I got lazy and didnt get it invested.
So maybe $25k in cash available and Im cheaping out on a monitor and video card

What happened there is one of my 27" monitors chumped out. I think the electrical storm last week got it.
So I took it down and just had the one 27"
Ever go from two 27" sitting side by side to just one? Its seriously cramped feeling.
I figured at some point Id want a wide screen, and this one was on sale, so I got it now. Now I have it and when we upgrade machines again I’ll have a monitor already.

Not really sure when we’ll replace these machines. The wife told me to go ahead and do it, but while these work I just have a hard time justifying it.
I am the cheapest human being on the planet, lol

If you want to really boast your frame rate, the CPU is actually have more impact in Wow.
Because Wow is heavily CPU bound.
1650 wont make much different from 1030 in Wow like what you see in those comparison video.
Take a look a these video

What is your current CPU ?

Thats 1920x1080. TS moved to 2560x1440. Graphics is more demanding at same settings.

yeah, eventually we’ll buy new machines.
I usually take some time looking when we’re thinking about whole new systems.

These are running just over 3GHz, so definitely not top of the line.
I just play casually so I’ll never get back into a full blown gaming rig.
More just had a monitor blow out and decided to get a bigger single monitor and now Im wanting a little more video card.

lol…VERY limited.
I saw a couple cards in the $400 range I was tossing around in my head, then saw the required power supply.
Not happening. These machines run good, but Im only going to spend so much on them for now.
Really wish that monitor hadnt gone down and put me in this position in the first place.
usually my monitors outlast the PC by 2 or 3 years, but this one blew after about 4yrs, 4months.

What Im not gonna do is put a big new PS into this thing then have the whole machine go down.

Its a prebuilt, basic Acer Desktop. Wasnt really made for much more than browsing.
Im amazed it even runs ESO and a couple other games Ive tried, but Im sure its only doing it because I doubled the ram, added the GT1030 and tossed a couple SSDs into the box.

jesus man…what do you cool that thing down with? lol.

Definitely going to watch it next time. These were ok when we bought them, but as Ive looked at video cards Im realizing 300w isnt as much as it used to be way back when.

lol…if you saw this machines guts your eyes would roll back in your head and wonder what in gods name Im even thinking playing ANY games with it at all, lol.
Its not worth the Video card upgrade, let alone much more.
Its a low end cheap prebuilt with onboard graphics that I tossed a GT1030 and another 8 GB ram into, lol.
Frankly, it probably shouldnt be used for anything more than web browsing.

yup.
Acer Aspire, 3GHz…came with onboard graphics and 8GB ram and a 1TB HHD.
Nothing to write home about…actually my mother would be embarrassed for me for owning it lmao

Thanks for all the info and help, everyone!

I play WoW on a RX480 from 2016 lol

ugh…

“Power Connector 1 x 6-pin”

REALLY needed to pay attention to that part before going over to the store. lol
I dont see a single 6 pin in the machine. lots of others left to use, but no 6 pin.

I think you should hold off, save a little bit more and get something newer.

oh, the money isnt the thing. We’re sitting on too much cash as it is. Im just a cheapo trying to squeak by on as little spent as possible. lol.
Evidently I didnt see that 6 pin connector required in the specs.
Back to the drawing board.

Well still in that case (wanting to save as much as you can) waiting may be a good idea. Prices are coming down daily on hardware.

The 4070RTX coming out and is supposedly only $500. Meaning every card in the 2xxx and 3xxx series is going to drop extremely low.

well, I got the monitor…I guess I’ll take the video card back and just sit on what I have until we buy new machines.

Thanks a ton for your suggestions and help!

No problem. I know waiting sucks but it is best case scenario in my opinion. Hardware prices are finally normalizing after several years of insanity. It’s going to be nice.

I cannot wait to build a new PC. Good luck to you!

I Bought a eVga GTX 1650 XC like 5 years ago and it’s been solid.
bottleneck for me is my CPU, an i7-4750, from 2014.

Playing at 1080p on a samsung IPS monitor also from 2014.

I get 50-60 fps everywhere except Valdrakken 25-35 fps and doing dragon races about the same.

Currently window shopping for my next build, not happy with prices of anything right now!

This is what I have.

EVGA GeForce GTX 1660 XC Black GAMING, 06G-P4-1161-KR, 6GB GDDR5, HDB Fan

I bought it in 2019

I am confused.

Is the 1650 new or something?

How do I have a 1660 and you’re thinking about getting a 1650?

mostly because Im not as well versed on hardware as I was 20 years ago, lol
Imagine me as a lower IQ Forrest Gump asking for help from Einstein lmao.
Im in the dark here anymore because Ive gotten so lazy about keeping up with hardware advances so now I have no clue what card even compares to another card.

I’ll look at 1660 and see what I can come up with.
The 300W power supply is my cap with this PC. Not really worth investing too much time / money into.
That and evidently I dont have a 6 pin power connector in this thing either.

I see this at MC.

“Power Connector 1 x 8-pin
Recommended Power Supply 450 Watts”

out of my league with this crate. lol.

Gotcha

I just wasn’t sure how the tech has progressed since 2019

Historically they were bumping up numbers/versions every 6 months to a year IIRC

So when you said 1650 I was like… they havent gotten to the 1700’s or 1800’s yet? I havent been paying attention.

Speaking of power supplies. This is what I have.

[Seasonic S12III 550 SSR-550GB3 550W 80+ Bronze, ATX12V & EPS12V, Direct Output, Smart & Silent Fan Control, Power Supply]

EDIT: I was just looking at the NewEgg invoice. I paid $219.00 for that Graphics card, brand new.

Screw it. The micro center sales guy talked me into buying an actual gaming system LOL

It’s got a pretty good video card with 12 GB already in it

Perfect.

I was going to say that as a suggestion, because…

IMHO, back in 2019, that was about the last year that building your own PC was cheaper than a preassembled rig, again, imho.

Because, after that, the graphics cards went through the roof and it was almost cheaper to buy a rig and get the graphics card “free”

So, you probably did right.

Grats
