I just want to point out that BFA designed it so that when a hunter with a pet enters a dungeon or raid there growl/taunt is automatically turned off. This was the new thing that BFA brought to hunters in the expansion in an effort to help those who forget to turn it off. The only way the pet can taunt is if the hunter manually clicks the growl/taunt on their pet. I have had way too many failed tanks trying to blame the hunter for their goof ups, and accuse the hunter of “not turning growl/taunt” off. I have watched hunters who were doing everything right in a dungeon run get kicked because some folks still think that growl/taunt wasn’t turned off. If I see a vote to kick stating hunter pet taunting, I will vote against kicking them, especially if I see that the hunter is doing good damage and isn’t doing anything wrong.
I’m pretty sure it might be buggy or a hunter maybe misclicks. There are times in dungeons when hunter pets definitely do taunt and pull off the tank. Whether it was intentional or a bug is another matter. (And no it doesn’t happen nearly as often as before bfa).
The Bad Pet addon will also sometimes claim pets are growling when they aren’t.
I’ve been on both sides of it.
I’ve had it bug out on my hunter alt. Taunt was NOT on autocast, it was still be cast. What was worse is I was unable to interact with the icon on bar and in the spellbook. Took a relog.
OP is right though. It should be turned off by default when entering though.
Hunter alt.
ive found that if my pet in combat dies in a dungeon or Raid, when i res it always immediately taunts as soon as it gets up even with growl turned off.
Interesting.
Usually running MM on mine so I rarely have him out. Gonna check this out later/
The game client UI doesn’t even place Growl on the pet bar 90% of the time and almost never with new tames. Hard to miss-click something on a separate taskbar that you might not even have on that taskbar to start with!
Tbh, even if the pet IS taunting, I find most of the time it’s not some kind of issue like so many like to make it out to be. So long as the pet isn’t taunting when the tank is still running forward to group more stuff up (thereby keeping some random mob out of the AoE pile if the hunter hasn’t changed targets to something in the pile), it’s actually a boon. Take some damage off the tank, sure, why not.
Yep. But I have just been noticing this a lot lately with hunters. I don’t know how people could not know about the changes since BFA came out, unless they just aren’t staying up on all the changes for the classes. Anyway…I have an alt hunter, but I have never seen a glitch with this, (not saying that glitches don’t happen) but when my alt enters the dungeons, the taunt/growl is always off as soon as I enter, and it stays that way for me when I play BM.
My hunter pet will automatically growl even when growl WAS turned off in these scenarios:
- I summoned it
- I resurrected it
- We just leveled. Incidentally pet will also lose 90% of its health, then growl. I can’t quickly turn it off either takes a few tries of toggle autocast on/off since it WAS off and pet cast it anyway.
I just throw out a “uhhh pet going to growl spaz really soon, sorry” when I am less than a bar from leveling. Nobody cared so far and the little bugger didn’t even die.
Interesting, I have never encountered this. Could it be an addon or something that is causing the issue? Also, have you tried reporting this to Blizzard?
I don’t think so about addons. No addon would make the pet lose all its health when we ding. On the contrary I would expect a ding to heal us both to full. Some kind of scaling thing.
As for the auto growl it feels like my pet gets reset and the game function to turn off growl doesn’t kick in first. Pet’s first instinct is to growl, then game turns off auto cast.
I made a few tickets at random points during leveling but they don’t address little bugs like this too fast.
Edit: Kind of like the new bug/glitch/feature where my pet won’t stay dismissed anymore when I mount. Made taming some new pets… interesting.
I am against stopping screwups from screwing up. Separate the bad from the good instead of trying to hide how bad the bad really is.
When leveling, the grind is so dull that huntard shenanigans are entertaining.
that’s not the case, it bugs.
especially when leveling. every time the hunter gains a level the pet taunt is turned back on even though it still appears to be off.
Had this happen to me as well, both ends of the scenario. On a tank, had a hunter pet taunt. Politely asked for a taunt check and he SWORE it was off. . . Even though the pet was doing the little animation with the !!! in red and then had agro several times. . .
So I paid attention when I was in a dungeon leveling my hunter just now. Sure enough, when we leveled after the second boss. . . BAM Pet was taunting even though it wasn’t even toggled on. A quick toggle on/off again cleared the issue, but I can see why it would be frustrating to tanks who are trying to position things so that the group won’t be hit by frontals or AoEs and everything is going smooth until SUDDENLY and inexplicably, the pet is taunting again. . .
Thank you for the confirmation that I’m not just going bananas!
People confuse good dps as a pet taunt. I guarantee you that many confuse these together. Good dps can pull without a taunt.
One annoying thing is that if you use your pet taunt to save the tank and your pet dies then it will automatically taunt again as soon as you revive it.
Same, it bugs out for mine as well, the autocast shows disabled yet i’ll see the CD go off
I made a fresh bm hunter today and with growl turned off my pet is still spamming growl, so I turned auto cast on then off, didn’t fix it…
