yeah..growl costs nothing and pets get it right away.

Silly question but you did get Growl from the Pet Trainer, right? Growl isn't learned from other pets, but rather the pet trainer. You then teach it to your pet.
Also, hopefully you are not talking about the very first boar you train as part of the lvl 10 quest. Part of your reward for completing this quest line (taming 3 pets) is to actually be able to get core skills from the pet trainer.

Well growl is usually learned when you do the hunter quest at 10.
When you go to the main city to finish up and get feed and revive you automatically learn growl.
maybe that's screwed up cause you started at level 15 ?

Unfortunately, there are no pet trainers in the Demo and, from what I understand, all pets start with that ability. Ugh
No pets in Vanilla start with Growl, this is likely an oversight (one of many it would seem) on Blizz's part.

Ok so you won't get it then. Growl is only learned from the trainers and you learn growl rank 1 at level 10 with the pet quest.

Could be it.
I haven't played it so it could be working, and people could be not managing threat.
