A few questions about the efficiency of group leveling.
Would it be viable to gather a few friends and level as a group? I know you get less experience if you level in a group per mob kill, but how much? Having a group that’s similar level to cut down on the time it takes to form dungeon groups could be beneficial.
If I played a healer and healbot for a war dps, would this be efficient?
Would running a 5-man dungeon w/ 2 hybrid classes off-healing be more efficient than running 1 healer?
Has anyone thought of ideas concerning this topic that they’d like to contribute?
Would anyone that plans on hardcore grinding for lvl 60 on release be interested in adding tags?
I think it all comes down to competition and how many you actually plan to group with.
Xp is split evenly among all members of the group. So say if you are all level 1 and a kill a mob that yields 50xp you will each gain 10xp.
If you can find a good place we’re you are clearing through mobs with your group and respawns are appearing before you kill your last group you are undoubtedly in a good spot.
However if you are in a highly contested area and are sharing packs of mobs with other groups/players and now waiting on respawns you are effectively cutting into your xp gain because not only are you waiting for the xp to come you are also splitting that with who ever else is with you in your party.
xp was split amount got the group. You got less xp per kill, but you killed much faster, which also meant you took less damage and had less down time. I would say it is more efficient to group, so long as you are killing more mobs.
No. As mentioned above, mobs die faster, warrior will take less damage. Just DPS and offheal the warrior.
No, any healing class can heal 5mans without being specced to heal. It would be better for one to just DPS or tank while the other heals. Hybrids just need to keep a separate set of gear for other roles.
Horribly inefficient, which sucks because it’s a game that encourages group play.
Priest+Warr would be good but the priest should stick to the standard shadow leveling spec. They can dish out respectable damage by themselves and have the backup heal when needed.
Not real sure. But I would say one full healer. The party healer can’t really afford to dps during downtime because they should be regenerating mana.
I’m contributing right now
I unfortunately have a life so I wouldnt be able to play hardcore with you
Grouping will be slower than solo but it is doable. A solo player gets double the xp assuming its 2 people in a group. They also get the same amount of quest xp. They get all the vendor trash to make gold where a group would split it halving their income.
In the end you will get through quests faster but you will need to grind more mobs to keep up with a solo player in overall xp/level. Also, assuming you aren’t a pally/lock, the solo player will probably get their mount before the group at 40 because they aren’t sharing income with other players.
Additionally, the solo gets to keep all the items that drop off of random mobs where the group has to roll for them and hope they win. This also affects gold income/gear.
It’s worth noting that when you need to find 10 theramore medals for a quest, now you have to find 50, or [Group size] x 10.
Easy enough for some quests with high drop rates, but it’s a nightmare on quests with low drop rates.
In addition to that, even if you try to skip these quests, some other quest chains are locked behind this kind of quest.
For example, Webwood Venom Sacs in the start of Teldrassil. You have to find 6 or 8 of those things, and then after that it unlocks the moonwell quest chain which is a chain of 5+ super easy quests.
I don’t remember if there’s group xp bonus this early in vanilla. Assumed yes before seeing this thread, but am unsure now. Obviously it’s with 3+ members only.
The real answer is NO, groups of 5 in no way were efficient in classic. Drop rates were too low. A group of 2 is fine. Warrior/priest is ultimate leveling duo. Finding 3 DPS for dungeons is beyond easy, you have your pick of the litter.
I wouldn’t worry about efficiency, I’d just enjoy leveling with friends and talking about all the interesting and close encounters and making up strats when you see them irl.
Depends on the size of the group. It can be good. The main problem is actually just having people sync up their schedule. If someone is ready to log in and level and one isn’t available to yet… do you just wait until everyone can play? No one will be healbotting, everyone will be dpsing and anyone who can will throw a heal will do so when it’s needed.
It’s a decent way to help slower leveling classes benefit from being able to slam thru some quests.
Another issue is pace. Personally, I am a little slower than some of my friends because I don’t like to rush and I actually find leveling to be relaxing. Due to this I have avoided leveling with friends since TBC. lol
Depending on what class you play, 2 man parties are the way to go. I’m planning to level with a warrior/paladin team. Warriors are known for slow leveling speed due to a lot of downtime. Prot paladins are very efficient, but slow killers. Combine them and you get an efficient duo that can plow through mobs. Together they can kill over twice as many mobs in the same amount of time as they could on their own.
you kill stuff faster and get loot faster, even if you get less xp per kill
the only things holding you back are the respawn timers and certain quest objectives
The point I was making is that 2 players can kill 20 mobs faster than a solo player can kill 10. Grinding is part of vanilla anyways. So in the end you actually end up getting more xp.
Might be a problem if they go with pserver caps, or you get stuck behind the main leveling pack.
