so i know everyone is mainly questing their way to the top, however in my guild some have been talking about just a straight grinding method from 1 - 60, i just wanted to see if any of you tried it to see if it held any merit.
Haven’t tried grind method, there are videos of people who have. They both work the same as most qst have you kill something, but get a bonus at the end. The other way just has you kill stuff, with less travelling all over to turn in qsts. The grind method is more tedious, and repetitive, but it works. It’s up to you on which you wish to choose as it’s a pretty easy decision.
I believe the grind will also help out with mount gold, more so than questing.
I’ve never done just grinding to 60, that sounds painful and slow. I think a mix of the two is the better solution.
Nilla/Classic is about incorporating grinding into questing… if you notice most quests have you killing x amount or collecting x amount…the fastest way to level & make gold is to grind on your way to and from quests. I always see people running by so many mobs just to get the the quest area.
The grind itself will mess with your reputations at max level. I don’t really know the viability of it besides a fast 60 time.
I do a mix. For quests, I mostly do kill quests with some gather quests mixed in. I’ll also do quests that reward an item upgrade, unless it’s a long drawn out run around the entire world quest chain that ends with killing an elite that is 10 levels above me and make the reward pretty useless by the time I can get it.
Grinding I’ll mix in when I find a good spot between the quest objective area and the quest turn in area. I’ll grind there until my bags are full and then go sell everything at the quest turn in and also turn in the quest.
Grinding catches up to questing because there is usually much less down time because of travel, you get to choose mobs that are efficient for you to kill with your class tool kit, and you can find spots where you are not competing with other players for tags on quest mobs.
I gather quests, then kill everything between the hub and the quest to and from. Its a mix of both and I dont miss out on the reputations.
Questing will almost always be better than grinding for nearly every class except Mages. The only exception is if you’re on a very crowded server where quest hubs are being completely camped. I usually grind multiple levels between 40-54 though. Grinding is inevitable if you don’t run instances while leveling.
Exactly this. Do quests and grind on the way. It might take a little bit longer to reach your destination, but killing an extra dozen mobs every time you go from A to B stacks up in the long run.
IMO, you should only really need to grind if you are farming for drops/gold, or to gain an extra level or two if you have completed all the main quests in your current zone but aren’t quite high enough for the next.
The speedrunners have pretty much figured out that questing mixed with grinding in the spaces between objectives is the fastest. Dungeon cleaving can be slightly faster in terms of xp/hour but is more prone to setbacks in terms of getting the party together, accidental deaths until you master the route, and instance lockout. Open world grinding is the slowest unless you can get a higher level you to carry you through a fast respawn area where mobs are orange for you and green for them.
EDIT: Layer grinding does make open-world grinding the most efficient, but I’m not sure if it can still be pulled off.
I prefer questing, because doing different things in differnets zones isn’t as depressing as just punching same mobs over and over and over and over and over
I grin in certain points based on money and level, otherwise I quest.
When I grind its a few levels before 40 to get mount money, and once I can start farming the furbolg for timbermaw rep. Since timbermaw rep is useful grinding it for a level or 2 is not a bad way to get xp, plus they have a repeatable turn in quest. look for things like that for grinding and they can help a ton.
Some quests are grinds.
Might as well grab quests for areas your are grinding in anyway.
Apart from how boring it is, this is really important.
what i might try when i make my warrior tonight is do all the northsire quests then grind the rest of the way up to 8 or 10 then burn down elwynn
I do some of both. When I find an area with lots of skinnable mobs I will slay and skin for quite a while. I have done entire levels by grinding this way. As a solo mele rogue there are just some quests I choose to skip.
I do a mix of both.
If I have all my quests completed and I’m half way or more towards the next level I’ll just grind it out before turning them in and continuing on.
On my Hunter I grinded 38-40 in Dustwallow for mount money and on my Warrior 30-32 in Hillsbrad before moving on to STV.
I grind 2 level out of every 10. General like
10-12
20-22 etc.
Then do questing for the rest. There aren’t enough solo quests in game to get 60 just off of them so grinding is necessary
I’ve always mainly quested but now I’m thinking, when I get to the area with the mobs I need for the quest, once I’ve done what the quest requires, I’ll keep grinding until my bags are full before heading back. That’s a good idea.
