Been getting a lot of grief lately from players who don’t think i should be selling portals, or from people who try to make me make them a portal first and if i don’t before getting paid, they get mad.
I got a guy who told me “I usually tip mages 5g for portal unless they’re asking for tip like a chud”.
The thing is, i usually let the person set the price. I usually get 1g without me asking for anything. Sometimes people give me 75s, and i’ll accept. When I get people under lv40 asking me, I charge them 30s-50s, because i know they’re trying to save up for mount.
I’m not trying to be greedy, but what’s so bad about tossing the player a few coin out of consideration for helping the other person out? I do it out of appreciation all the time.
What are your thoughts on characters selling their unique abilities?
I see nothing wrong with what you are doing. Would I love for mages to just port me around the world for free, sure, but I realize that there is a cost for the regent. Keep doing what you are doing and enjoy the tips and ignore those that bash you.
I just hit 40 yesterday (actually 41 hehe) and I’ve been paid a total of 5 gold already in combo from 2 separate people to teleport them. So I’m not sure what’s happening with you but I’m getting gold thrown at me without even advertising
Agreed and usually people that want to be teleported are alts in Darnassus that want to get to stormwind so it would actually cost me 30s just to teleport to them and then teleport them (20+10)
I know lots that do the same basically. I let them pick tip. As long as it covers reagent cost im good. Some call me cheap but that works both ways.
The reason to let them pick tip is because they tend to tip more i found. Basically human nature. Once i got 10g fir one portal to Thunderbluff from undercity. Was 3 level 13ish. I assumed for the couple instance quest. I also portal them to ORG. After free
How much does the Portal Reagent cost again? In my opinion, you should charge for the 0 reputation cost of the Reagent just to cover your own costs. Any tips beyond that are optional.
1g to save 10-30 minutes of running/waiting? I think that’s perfectly reasonable for a baseline service.
The reagents cost something like 20s in the first place right? Plus it costs the mage time to do this, and they had to pay for the training in the first place.
Considering the absurd amount of hate mages are getting on the forums these days I think its absolutely right that a mage gets at the very LEAST the cost of the reagent for the service of extreme convenience they are providing someone. The very. Least.
It’s a slang insult directed at right-wing minded folks who believe that market capitalism is the ultimate good in the world … because that’s what Jesus would think.
As a mage in Vanilla, I absolutely never charged for water. I got lots of tips for water and food, but I never charged or even expected money.
For portals? Dude, that’s different. The going rate on Stormreaver (typical “tip”) was 2g once the server was mostly 60. Since we’re on fresh servers and anyone under 40 is still saving every penny for mounts, I wouldn’t expect more than 50s-1g for a portal as the “typical tip.”
Having said that, I never put up the portal until I got paid the cost of my reagent. Portals are not free. I would ask for cost of reagent, and people gave me 2g. Almost every time. Anyone who is angry with you or refusing to pay…doesn’t get a portal. Period.
Water is free. Arcane Intellect is free. Food is free. Portals…not free.
edited to add: I always offered a free portal (only one) at the end of dungeons for my groups.
I usually tip 40-75s. Usually 50s for a port, is this an ok price? I want them to get a little for helping and to cover the mats, without being over charged.
If I’m standing in UC and /y for a port to TB it’s well worth the silver
