Hi, sorry if this is a dumb question.
I have vsync, my framerate capped at 60 FPS and other settings turned down, yet my GPU still overheats while playing Warcraft and a few other games. I have it seated properly but am quite confused on why it does this (I’m not the most tech smart person). I am using an older card, an AMD HD7870 and wondering if this is just the GPU showing its age or I am doing something wrong.
On that note, are programs like D3D Overdrive (I forget it’s name, forgive me) allowed to be used in conjunction with Warcraft? Just for capping out the framerate and trying to keep my GPU at a good temperature. I’m saving up for a new PC but want to give the game and classic a shot with the anniversary coming up.
Thank you for any responses.
what case fans do you have? do you have one in the front to pull air into the case, in the back to pull air out, any side fans? you could use a program like MSI Afterburner to unlock the default fan speed to about 25% above normal. but the fan noise will increase. i used it on my old desktop with a GTX750. side note is your card dust free?

Agree with Eel here. Your case and it’s fans are very important. I know of some cases which I call “Hot Cases” that have virtually no inlets for air anywhere nor fans, and similarly have very little in the way of exhaust for air nor fans.
Obviously it’s important to keep temps down on your rig for longevity and years of trouble free gaming. For these reasons you may consider purchasing a “gaming case” which these days are very inexpensive + fans. I would recommend paying a little extra for your fans and try to get fans with Hydro-Dynamic Bearing which run quieter and last longer.
Finally if you do find you are running a hot case just do what I do and remove the whole side panel while gaming. You will find your whole rigs runs a lot cooler now except your mainboard which will be running 3-4 degrees hotter which doesn’t matter.

I run 4k with two 2080 tis in SLI and built the computer. My cards too heat up quite at bit, but it is completely variable and completely manageable. Outside of the obvious, like dust inside the cards (which can be fixed by simply removing the cards, using something in the fans to stop them from spinning and using a blower or whatever to blow out the dust) or improving the airflow in your case, managing the ambient room temperature, etc., there are a few key things you can do to lower your card temperatures.
On the not so practical or necessary side here are some solutions. First, you can change the screen resolution, mind you that shouldn’t be necessary. Second, you can take the side off of your case and use a fan to blow air inside your case, but that is also not so practical. Third, you can get better case fans, and probably set up your airflow in your case, but again, not so necessary–but all depending. Fourth, you can get a new video card, or a second card for Crossfire, or whatever that is called–and link up your two cards. Fifth you can just get a new computer, but why???
And now for what are your more viable and best solutions–and these are with your in game settings under Menu > System > Graphics. First, change your graphics settings, like by disabling Vertical Sync. That did wonders for me. Second, lower your “Graphics Quality” a few notches. Even though my system rocks pretty well the best hardware for gaming on the planet, I have my settings at 7. And now for your be all and end all solution… Drum roll please… Also the easiest and most basic thing to do. Go to Menu > System > Advanced and move the two FPS dials down to anywhere between 30 and 50. Honestly, I run my system with both at 30, and the fans are super quiet, the temperatures of my cards never go above 55 to 60 and I notice no very noticeable difference in my game play, outside of it being a little less smooth when I move too fast.
Hopefully the above helps. Also, for problems outside of World of Warcraft, you can limit your FPS in most cases with your GPU software–or at least you should be able to. My cards are Asus/Nvidia, and hence I am not familiar with your card.
