Got Scammed

Fell for the first WoW scam in my almost 20 years of playing this game. It felt too good to be true and honestly should have just trusted my gut instinct.

The guy was spamming in trade that he was selling rare TCG mounts like Reins of the Swift Spectral Tiger, Magic Rooster, etc. Initially PM’d him just out of curiosity to see how much he was selling for. Then got ropped into “messaging him on Discord”, obviously such that there’s no footprint trail of him doing the scams.

He kept nagging me on days for Discord and continuously dropping the price. First it was 20mil for SST, then 15mil, he honestly would have dropped it to 10mil if I continued to wait. I fell for the bait because his Discord server felt legit. There were red flags I obviously very much ignored and now regret it.

Posting here so that people are aware of the scam and also don’t fall victim to it. Don’t trust ANYTHING done on Discord. Don’t trust “any code” they sell you. If they can’t trade you the item, don’t even bother. Hope the dude enjoys 13.5 million gold. Blizzard support has yet to give me back my 3 million in-game that I traded him (with screenshots as proof)!

I would report this guy’s Discord server if I could, but I can’t because he obviously instantly banned me the moment he was “done with me”. Unfortunate.

I feel bad for your situation but come on. Blizzard TOS says they don’t support anything outside the game and that should be the biggest clue instantly.

Like you said, with the majority of this being done over Discord, there’s no log for Blizzard to review to see one way or the other what went down and why.

It would be nice to recoup anything that you’ve lost, but given how sketchy it comes across, I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Common sense just kind of left the building there, it seems. Next time don’t do the very obviously dumb thing. I’m sorry that happened to you and I totally agree that people like that should be blasted but I’m fairly sure the forums don’t allow call outs so don’t be surprised when this gets deleted. :grimacing:

Expensive lesson to be reminded of.

Sucks, but I don’t think you have any chance of getting your gold back considering the circumstances.

I’ve also seen someone advertising the TCG mounts recently. Also thought “too good to be true”. Could very well have been the same douche.

At this stage, I think it’s pure folly to engage with an offer like this… Only because we will most likely see these mounts on the Trading Post. No point in risking being scammed.

It’s a whole group of people doing this. Most of the time they’re on level 60 trial characters (at least on my server). I know plenty of people I play with that say they report them but Blizzard can’t (won’t?) do anything about it.

I’m really sorry this happened to you. There are a lot of scammers in the American region, so you have to be careful.

I believe the best solution to this issue would be to restrict access to the EU/NA servers only to people who actually live in the EU or NA.

Unfortunately, in a number of non-Western countries, stealing digital assets and selling them is considered a source of income, and local authorities in those countries do not punish such scammers in any way.

Great idea on paper. Though easily circumvented with a VPN.

Blizzard does have technologies that detect VPN connections. One time, I forgot to turn off my VPN and tried to log into the game, and Battle.net notified me about it.

Always do transaction fully within game so there is a trail for blizzard to follow…the second someone wants you to use a third party site for wow transaction it’s 99 percent a scam.

If it happens fully within game blizzard may not give your gold back but can take steps to punish said account.

Sadly it’s a moot point since these guys are using stolen accounts anyways they will just hope on another or create dummy accounts

Ok cool, I did not know that!

So does the game not let you log in if the VPN is still active? Or is it just a notification and you can still log in?

The game will still let you log in, but they can change that anytime they want!

Well, as they say…

Keeping it classy, nice. Very easily said as an anonymous user on the internet. Hope you nor anyone you know gets scammed; it’s not fun and games mate.

I want 13.5 mill gold. :frowning:

I mean, I have galf a dozen proverbs snd sayings about “if an offer is too good to be true, it usually is”.

Like sorry you got duped by a scam, but there were dozens of red flags and you decided to keep ignoring them against your better judgement…like…what do you want from people here?

Sadly, the very first red flag, and arguably the most important one, was when they said “let’s do this transaction over Discord”. Hopefully you did indeed learn your lesson.

“Misery loves company” is a proverb too.

I’m not “wanting” anything. I want to warn others who may fall victim to this. Name and shame. The snarkiness isn’t needed. Tonight sucks and shows a major flaw this game has yet to fix.

I feel like most would be enraged and very demanding in your position. That much gold isn’t something to scoff at.
