Good video, Addon section definitely worth a watch

The last section is about the Curseforge / WowUp business and it gave me more to think about. I don’t like Overwolf and my dislike of Overwolf made me kinda sorta see WowUp as the goodguys simply by not being Overwolf. But hearing from addon creators it seems that’s not really the case, for obvious reasons (not getting paid for their work).

Personally, I don’t really use either, the way they want me to at least. I’ve never been to WowUp and I’m still one of those people who downloads and installs every addon manually. I guess because I’m a luddite or something. Bottom line, I still don’t like Overwolf. I’m still going to continue to download and install manually, but I’m going to do it with a thought to how my using of the addons gets the addon creators the most money for their work. For me, that’s using Curseforge site with ads, like I’ve been doing, since I can’t bring myself to pay a sub to Overwolf.

But that’s just me. I’m not saying I’m right. I just think people should give the video a watch and think about it for themselves.

Tbh, I think people are acting like overwolf is the big bad wolf. Not you specifically, but lots of people. It’s an addon manager with ads, you don’t have to pay for anything if you don’t want. Just think of it like an ad-on manager. Really not the end of the world over here.

I’ve had 0 problems with overwolf. It will be okay, don’t stress yourself too much over this.

Maybe. But I read about some of their past shady stuff and just didn’t want to deal with them based on that. I could be wrong though.

Bookmark the addons you like, pin your addon folder to quick access. When there a WoW patch, open up your addon pages and click download. When they done downloading, click on them in your downloads. Right click the addon, copy, right click on your addon folder in quick access, paste. These tools are advertiser profile scrapers that do nothing you can’t do on your own.

Exactly what I do. But at least the ads on the Curseforge addon pages put a little money in the pockets of addon creators.

I mean a person only needs to google Overwolf to see they have an extensive history of being absolutely terrible, but I could see why those invested in it, like say, the add-on creators who are now receiving a financial incentive for their hobby, would wish to obfuscate that information and try to paint it as people overreacting.

Overwolf/Curseforge is no worse than something like… visiting WoWhead. Basically, worst case, they run ads and aren’t picky enough so a sketchy one gets through at some point.

But Overwolf annoyed me when they were pushing their overlay back in the Teamspeak days so I’m avoiding it because of that, as petty as that is.

You could say the same thing about Blizzard.

Or, hear me out! They are people who have used it with 0 problems and don’t want their friends to get worked up over something when they don’t need to.

Addon creators barely get much of anything for their work to begin with. Only the major few addons make a bit more. Most addon creators could probably buy a McDonald’s sandwich with what they make a month.

While I have no issues making sure they are appreciated in some manner, having the mindset that this is their livelihood is not correct.

Nothing they did in past is any more shady then what we have heard about Blizzard…

Because it’s against the TOU/EULA to do so. It’s not a job, it’s not work, it’s a hobby project for a game they do not own the rights to.

Also, this same person went to defend for Overwolf when it released the last time it had blowback. Further, trying to point at people that basically just talk on a screen and ‘newscast’ WoW stuff (IE reaction channel) is yet another thing that shouldn’t be getting paid.

Overwolf is awful, and I’m tired of posting about it because people keep opening new threads in regards to this every 10 minutes.

Overwolf has security issues, including one-click critical security breaches from last May. Further they’ve had issues vetting their ads previously, as they’ve had Ads that gave some users Malware as a result of clicking on them.

Not to mention the issues with Overlays that Overwolf has done, along with the old(not defunct) team up with Teamspeak that had tons of security issues.

Another thing people point out is their data analytics and how much they sell users data, which you have to CREATE an account, then go turn it off in the app which means they already have a decent chunk of the data they like to sell anyways like e-mail, name, gender, etc. It’s still not default off, and it still requires you to CREATE an account to do it.

Another is that when you download Curseforge, Overwolf tags along whether you want it to or not. Both launch when you run Curseforge, and again you have to opt for Overwolf to shut down as well when you close Curseforge.

Yet another is that Overwolf is a very ‘bloaty’ app, which again is substantiated and even Soul agreed it is but people go ‘well since you only run it before you play the game and install addons it’s fine!’ but not really especially for those that ‘forget’ to opt to close both out at once.

There’s a reason Soul specifically quoted and showed screenshots of what addon devs said on tweets but didn’t show any evidence of posts from the other side.

There’s a reason they quoted MysticalOS(DBM dev, who makes the most out of all addons and lives off it) as well and talked about his points so much. Which, coming from him is honestly kind of funny how he thinks WoWup and people not giving them money is ‘stealing’.

Addon authors can keep pushing like they somehow deserve to earn more money than what they were getting prior to Overwolf and such but they’re going to push addon users away and increase the likelihood of Blizzard or Microsoft stepping in later.

PC security, and information sales wise? Yeah, they’re far worse than Blizzard.

Could say the same to your own comments to me. :no_good_woman: kek ;3

Could say the same to OP, could say the same to these addon authors that think they deserve a living for making and upkeeping an addon for a hobby game they don’t own.

Oh I thought you were ignoring me. But these threads are becoming spam at this point.

It doesn’t matter really. Some people like me will continue using the CurseForge app some will continue using WowUp. If I’m picking a side then it’s the addon authors.

You mean like a streamer?

Streamers, most content creators as well yes.

The only reason Amazon/Twitch sold CurseForge to Overwolf is because it wasn’t making a profit. If it hadn’t sold, Amazon would have shut it down completely. Without CurseForge, many addon developers will run their own sites until the $6 a month and time commitment becomes too much. That won’t be fun for anyone.

Many of the sites under the “Curse” label couldn’t be sold and were shut down.

Of course, WoWUp can always start their own database site for addon devs to distribute from but they will need to generate income as well. The internet is all about money.
