Good dps logs used to be way easier, i have no idea what changed

because i am 99% sure my fingers are working just as well as they were during my time raiding in legion and bfa… i didn’t lost my touch or anything, i execute stuff the way I always did.
getting 90% above in my logs happened frequently when i played well.
but nowadays, i feel like i played my rotation at least 90% optimal, i see the logs and the result is horrible… what the hell is going on?

Class balance has changed. Try using the “compare” feature in Warcraft Logs and seeing how higher parsers are scheduling their casts.

Also check that you don’t have Int weapons.

Enchants and gems can get you as high as 20% bonus damage too.

It’s been a long time since Legion/BfA. More players care about parse performance than back then.

Lotta players have embraced doing pharse dmg as a measurement of doing well over mechanics sadly. Its made the 300-100 CE area a nightmare of bosses that could be killed far quicker if timmy the phaser wasnt hugging the floor so often.

I honestly think pharsing was one of the biggest negatives in the game of recent years. Its promoted extremely poor play.

I agree with that view point, but at least for me in the past if felt rewarding… it was like “congratulations, you know what you’re doing”
nowadays, i play the best i can and get a horrible log, it really does feel like “lol you’re so thrash, what the hell you’re doing, do dmg you idiot!”

Part of it is gearing got faster and easier so more people have more ilvl than you.

The other part is your spec’s gameplay has changed as a result you’re likely not as good at it as you were. I don’t know specifics of frost DK you’d have to ask someone else but even just your cpm is an indicator you’re not pushing out as much as you should.

Ive mental scars from healers trying to parse by using all their aoe healing to try and beat a mechanic that was a large burst of dmg on selected players followed by a nasty dot. Then blaming dps for not popping 3min cds every 60s when they died.

Worse part is they did kill the fight by bringing 4 healers when most used 3. The raid was almost entirely classes with self sustain…

considering i don’t even play m+ I can feel that a lot… though even the log on the supposed ilv margin that my character is the result is still bad.

As opposed to DPS, reading Healing logs is a whole 'nuther story. Jacking up your healing-per-second to look pretty on the logs is a crazy game, and, yeah, I’ve done it. I think squeezing in a Tranquility when the boss is on his last gasp is pointless but somehow fun when you announced, “padding logs!”

The pound for pound parse ( 3 ilvl range ) is very sensitive to having the current META build, your weapon, your trinks, and having gems and chants.

The overall parse is very sensitive to all that plus relatively high iLvl.

While this is true, doing the encounter mechanics properly is a pass / fail given. Damage is another mechanic and very important.

You don’t do damage when you’re dead, but being alive and doing tank damage is just as much of a drag on the group.

Read ilvl logs and not overall if you want to see how knowledgeable/skillful you are at your class.

I still cannot figure out what the heck this log site even means.

Im told im parsing greys but I see a bunch of blues and purples.

Mainly because M+ logs are weird. It really isn’t worth looking at M+ “Parses”. The only places it makes sense are in isolated encounters like raids. The fact there can be downtime outside of combat, as well as just far too many factors to list impacting your performance, not to mention the way sample sizes work with trying to separete each spec and each key level it’s not worth looking at. You have a purple in your 11 floodgate for example but if you check only players within your ilvl bracket it’s grey. Meaning out of the total populace doing all floodgates you were top 25%, but out of just the ones around 708 ilvl, you were bottom 8%. This is at all key levels combined, which is what makes the data so meaningless.

When people refer to parsing they almost always exclusively mean raiding.

Your medians are green/blue. You have some grey parses but there are so many factors involved with Mythic+ that those individual low parses don’t mean much unless you are doing it all the time. You look at the Median number for a better idea of how you are doing, even better to filter it by item level as well.

If you want to get that median number up, you just have to keep performing well consistently. Like the Priest said though, Mythic+ is weird because something as simple as how a tank pulls and moves with packs can completely alter your parses.

It is harder. The tools and guides are better, performance culture is stronger than ever, and rotations are just a holdover name from when it was a literal rotation. You can’t just parse well by minding your uptime and cooldowns anymore

Game complexity. The fights are designed to balance classes making it very scripted. Now lets talk about latency and cross realm/faction server linking. I transferred to stormrage and latency was 26 to 30 all the time. When I play with people from la servers its jumps to 70 but it feels so awful and the feedback I get from the game feels even later, I will have my dots up and as i void torrent my target no longer has dots. I have similar issues on the mage during arcane soul arcane missles don’t get clipped then an extra barrage will cast. Stuff like this destroys your dps. Blizzard is trying to make the game more reactionary but the engine and servers can’t deliver.

Same people nuked the original (better) DK rune system for the sole purpose of “not punishing players with bad latency” btw.

Thanks Blizz!

Don’t put any stock into ilvl parse. It’s exploitable and ultimately full of issues.

On heroic clears one of our healers farmed all of the 100s by taking off a piece of gear. Ignoring obvious exploitation like that, better players tend to have better ilvl so it’s almost by definition easier to get a higher ilvl parse than overall if you’re behind the curve and halfway decent.

Take note that you are at 93% mastery which according to Wowhead would be hurting your performance. After 71% you get diminishing returns supposedly. Try to build more haste and always Sim yourself.

Edit: I saw someone mention Frost DK this applies to Frost DK.

For what it’s worth, the Latin American servers are also located in the US. Assuming that’s where you’re located, it’s pretty much just Oceanic realms that have a noticeable impact on gameplay.
