If you can magically animate a corpse into a death knight. You can magically animate a pile of rocks into a death knight.
Animated stone creatures are already part of the scourge with gargoyles.

The Lich king has never been required to make a death knight.

Isnt that just an Earth Elemental?
I don’t think so? Earth Elemental would be closer to a spirit summons where a golem is closer to making a robot. You make a golem so it has no will of its own but you are asking an elemental/ spirit for help. This is just my take on it.
It makes as much sense as every other race as a dk after wrath

One is poorly chaining a pained soul to a corpse and enslaving that soul to do your bid.
The other is magically imprinting commands onto unliving stone to make it come to life.
Troll golems combine a bit of both! But it’s less “Painful servitude” and more “You get to chill in a cool stone body”. It’s rarely presented as a negative-- and sometimes, even an honor.

Shadowlands also came up with the “Any type of magic can be Necromancy!!!” crap. I absolutely dislike retconning stuff, but in Shadowlands’ case, I think I could look the other way…
From a questline I saw from the alpha (spoiler): the Earthen can apparently die of old age. Yeah, a rock dying of old age.

From what I understand they don’t age out like normal beings. Like the gross dwarf statue that is their body doesn’t change. Whatever magic is animating them eventually wears off.
They had a data-base crystal of memories they could upload into and be assigned a new body, but it done broke. Gosh, unlucky.
Anyway they sound a lot like an A.I. race. Specifically the Geth from Mass Effect.

they could just make a proper quest explaining how they’re being recruted after their death
