I just mined a gold node in Thousand Needles and afterwards I mined a copper and with both of them in my bags, I realized they are using the exact same icon. I really think gold had its own icon that was definitely more yellow and possibly a slightly different shape in Vanilla.

this 100%! i remem the gold or being a bigger piece of ore in the pic too
switching wowhead between bfa and classic shows the copper/gold color change.
if you look on classicdb which wasn’t based on wowhead data-mining and look up gold ore it is clearly using the exact same image of copper.
head on over to the TBC databse (tbc cavernoftime) and search gold ore its using the much golder looking picture
wowwiki and vanilla wowwiki both use the more yellow icon and have no mention of it ever being changed

Gold Ore always had (as far as I remember) a different icon, with a bright yellow hue around the ore.
