Good morning everyone! As the title says, I am looking for some options on how I can farm gold as a holy priest in classic. My problem is that the two gold making strats I planned out have fallen through, and need some alternatives.
When I originally decided on priest, I thought the end game meta would be more like retail…tanks high in demand, with healers not far behind. This is clearly not the case, with even dps being more desirable than healers in pug 5 mans. So my dream of living in dungeons for gold was shot down.
“No problem,” I thought. “There is always lasher farming when p2 comes out!” Except as we all know, that’s not an option in classic.
So what am I left with? I’m a tailor, so I can make about 20 gold every 4 days from mooncloth. And I’m also an herbalist, but herbs are still very low on my server, and I’m lucky to make 10 gold from a farming session. What can we priests, and healers in general, do to get that cash flowing?
Farm essence of water in Azshara. Get your fishing to 300. If you have no competition you can make 50-100G an hour depending on the price on your server. While leveling fishing farm up a bunch of oily blackmouth and sit on it til phase 2. They are used in Free Action Potions, which are very popular with the PVP crowd. On my server they are about 15s each right now, and you can get up to 3 stacks an hour depending on where you fish. Or you could level alchemy and make the free action potions yourself. On my server they are about 35s each, likely to go up as the PVP gets going.
While also fishing you can find wreckage pools that contain chests that can have greens and sometimes blues in them.
If you are on a PvE server, then I doubt the Free Action Potions will sell well til Battlegrounds Release.
You can also make good money if you are an alchemist and can make High level flasks/potions that are popular for raids.
You can also make good food buff items with high level fishing/cooking. Winter squid can only be caught in winter, so it might be worth it to stock up for when it cant be caught anymore. The +10 agility food buff is popular. Its not a ton of cash but its better than 20G every 4 days.
Try to get into the trend of doing Deadmines/stockades carries at 5g a person. if you clear deadmines in 30min or less doing big pulls, thats 20g per run x 2 runs an hour thats 40g/hour. if you charge 10g per person then its 80g/hour though it’s pretty tough finding people who are leveling their alts and are ok with spending gold like that.
There’s also fishing the Bay of storms. It’s fairly competitive and requires 300 fishing + 100 lure + 20 fishing pole, but you could get essence of water from the elemental water pools. Sometimes if you get lucky you will get 5-8 essences in a 15 minute time frame. Most of the time i’m unlucky with 0 pool spawns or just 2-3 essences from looking at the 6 spawn points.
Theres also flipping the winter robe for profit. Mats are like 65g and it goes for 100g so there is good money to be had. if you fish your own essence of water then the cost to make that robe drops a ton.
I don’t know if anyone else is, but I’m not paying 5G for a deadmines run. If anything, I’d ask guildies to run me through, if not waiting for a group to form normally. Maybe this will be viable further on down the road, but for now it seems like most people are still leveling their mains.
I really like the idea of fishing for waters. Those buggers are getting really expensive on my sever, and I imagine will only go up. Perhaps I can get to 300 fishing by the end of the weekend if I put on some Netflix to keep the boredom at bay.
You can farm anywhere that any other class farms aside from class ability specific grinds like solo dungeon farming techniques. But even then, holy priests can AoE DM East lashers easily and it’s not as nerfed as people are making it out to be. You could probably pull 20-30g an hour that way
It’s not as though holy priests don’t have damage abilities. Build a spell power set for farming and spam that Smite. Just have to be wary of world PvP
Honestly I’ve done some fishing and it doesn’t make money. Everything you can get with fishing sells for dirt cheap on the AH and just isn’t worth the time to farm unless you’re farming for your own buff food.
Fishing is always underrated, more so since the fishing tourney in not in game, so fewer people really work on it.
Winter squid was an awesome suggestion, and will only get better once spring rolls around and they become more valuable since they cannot be caught during that time, so for future funds, stock up on things like that. Fishing wont generate a ton of gold initially, but for certain fish, if you farm them, you can totally make money off them in later phases and time frames.
On my server I get 12-15g per Essence
12-15s per oily blackmouth, but ive been hoarding them for phase 2.
Grilled squid is all over the place. Seems to sell for ~50% higher on the weekend compared to the week days. Usually 25-40s per squid.
All it takes is a dozen or so players competing for rank 14 in WPVP to keep the consumable economy rolling. Those guys buy supplies, they don’t farm them.
I play very early in the morning, so my competition for the essence is fairly low. I’ve had one lucky streak where I got 13 of them in one farm around the area. But most of the time its 4-6 per cycle around the area.
Your server could have an over abundance of fishers driving the price down.
See, I did that when I played on moon guard. Made hundreds of thousands of gold, but it’s exhausting after a while. (gotta do more than just dance ya know).
Honestly the best thing to do is learn how to play the auction house. Buy low, sell high.
Leveling I’m going mining/skinning and selling stuff on the AH - it is working decently so far. I plan on doing engineering/mining endgame and will drop skinning but skinning is extra money every kill and has been great so far.
Endgame money though? Playing the auction house or finding a niche product that isn’t on there often is how I’ve always made my gold.
They spawn in specific spots. Should be able to look it up on the internet.
You need 300 fishing and a 100 lure, and they can still get away. A pair of gloves with +2 fishing and the big iron fishing pole can put you at 407 with the best lure. They can still get away. I believe you need the +35 fishing pole from the STV tournament and a 100+ lure to guarantee no missed hooks.
You can also catch the winter squid there, which depending on the server, can sell for a decent amount.
If you are a priest the fastest way to travel is using levitate. You can also fish from the floating position if there is an elite mob passing near the land. I would carry a few swim speed potions if they are cheap enough to make the swims less awful if you get hit while traveling.
I would go out there on a day that’s all you are gonna do. The +100 lures only last 5 minutes, I try to bring 2 stacks of them.
These are highly contested on most servers, so if you have a job that lets you play into the wee hours of the morning, that’s probably your best bet.
There isnt any farm without the lashers that is consistent. Im running DM:E Jump Runs with two warriors from guild. We are round robining the boss loot. If a high ticket item drops one of us will sell on AH and split profits.
Idk what server you’re on but I’m raid geared on anniversary and I make pretty decent gold selling heals in dungeons. My price varies on the dungeon but it’s usually equals out to ab 80-100g an hour. Finding an orb farming group for strat live is ideal. Lasher farming also is an option not sure who told u it wasn’t
