Godzilla Minus One now on Netflix

So my favorite movie of 2023 is now on Netflix as of today. Just under 2 hours runtime.
Oh! The title refers to the setting. Post WWII Japan’s economy is at Zero, then as they just start to rebuild, Godzilla shows up. Taking things from Zero to Minus One.

Even without Godzilla, this is a solid period piece showing how the people banded together through (arguably) the lowest point in their country’s history. Friendly little reminder that part of Japan’s WWII surrender was they had to disband their armed forces. Something that has stuck to this very day.

Audio is in Japanese
English
French
German
Spanish (Latin America)
Czech
Filipino
Hindi
Hungarian
Indonesian
Italian
Polish
Portuguese (Brazil)
Spanish (Spain)
Tamil
Thai
Turkish

With subtitles in 34 languages.

Bonus: There’s a 6 min making of/behind the scenes vid on YouTube.

I wish I could see it in black / white but this is still an awesome movie.

Oh, I think I’ll watch it then. Thanks for the info.
Currently watching a fighting anime (Garouden) that is also newly released.

I don’t mean to be a stick-in-the-mud but I don’t see how you guys can call this a good movie. Correction… good Godzilla movie. I understand that movies of this genre come with a certain amount of campiness so I’m not complaining about that.

The movie started out great with … WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD …

Godzilla destroying that kamikaze repair outpost. I thought the design of young Godzilla looked great and I loved the destruction, even though Godzilla throwing soldiers instead of eating them was really weird and I don’t get it.

Anyways

Then the movie got so boring. Something I always hated about the new Godzilla movies is they tried to focus more on the “story” than Godzilla stomping around destroying stuff and and fighting other monsters. I tried to watch the movie two times but both times I fell asleep during the man, girlfriend(?) and their adopted daughter scenes. I just couldn’t bring myself to care about their family dynamic. I woke up the second time I tried to watch it and seen Godzilla was trying to eat the boat the star was working on, which perked me up because that was great, but then it got boring again and I fell back asleep.

Gonna try to watch it again one more time today. I have coffee this time and I’ll scrub through those boring family scenes

TBH I never got Godzilla or King Kong, but the OP’s enthusiasm won me over a bit to try it. Maybe I’ll comment again if/when i watch it… heheh

I got to cleaning yesterday and forgot about it. I talked to my daughter yesterday who is a Godzilla fan too (I corrupted her) and she warned me there was more stupid relationship stuff than Godzilla screen time.

So disappointing and I wish they would knock that crap off.

This is pretty much the one godzilla flick that got people to care about the humans.

Godzilla is great too. But man. The final battle with Goji is just so good for both sides.

Just watched this because of this thread…

Movie was awesome. I loved how grounded and real it felt. Finally, a movie that felt like the historical accounts of what happened after the war.

You could have cut out the Godzilla bits and it’d still be an awesome film.

Also just liked that this godzilla is freaking MAD and yet he’s so smol compared to past Gojis lol

Just a smol angy lil fella

Or just Koichi being dead serious about flying the plane into Godzilla. Just for that relief when he ejects out of the plane in time. Dude was ready to die for a legit reason this time but he still gets to live. Felt so damn good.

I am bit disappointed that we didn’t get announcements for blu-ray worldwide, but at lease everyone can access this movie and this movie is number 1 on Netflix as it should be. Hopefully come November 3rd, we can hear an announcement for possible sequel.

I would not call it a relationship as our main character, Koichi Shikishima, is racked with Survivor’s Guilt and PTSD. The young woman and the baby, that’s not hers, he reluctantly helps them out. Hope you do consider watching it if that perks your interest.

Godzilla is very much the threat of the movie. He is shorter than the Heisei, Millennium, and Monsterverse versions, true, but he about the same height as the original 1954 one.

A relationship is not always romantic and they had a relationship. They live together but I figured out they were something different when they showed them sleeping in separate areas.

And I know what his problem is but knowing doesn’t make the story good. To me it was incredibly boring.

When I watch a Godzilla movie, I expect to see monsters stomping around fighting each other and destroying stuff. The only reason they try to tell stories in these new Godzilla movies is because it’s waaaaaay more expensive to create a really good looking monster with CGI than to hire a guy wearing a rubber suit. Personally, I’m starting to miss the rubber suit.

Ah, Minus Color. That will be out streaming later this summer.

I feel you on that one. Hopefully we will get the Blu-Ray/4K copy worldwide later this year.

Ah, you’re still good. Toho has been putting out shorts that fill that itch.
