Humans weren’t experiments, they’re a result of the curse of flesh just like Gnomes and Dwarves.
Goblins were experiments, their outcome was not intentional.
But not malformed. Malformed is from creatures that lost their significant abilities. That is humans.
Uplifted is what goblins are. Mimron wanted to see if he could super charge the evolution time and he did. Hence he uplifted a primitive race into super intelligent conquerers
And mimron like any scientist, likes what he created. The humans are just deformed outcasts from their ancestors

I thought Goblins only became smart because of their prolonged exposure to Kaj’amite that they were forced to mine while enslaved by the trolls?

This is the timeline of goblins. There was a primitive creature that Mimiron took an interest to. The Tinker God discovered kajimite as well and decided to use it in an experiment in forced evolution. So he took said primitive species and use kajimite on them and forced them into an evolutionary time jump into goblins. They became smarter, stronger and more inventive.
Eventually, Mimiron got tired of said experiment and left, this left the goblins to slowly go back to their primitive ways and started to lose their intelligence.
Then they got enslaved by the trolls and forced to mine Kajimite. This rock reactivated their intelligence for them to once again, use their tinker abilities to make weapons of mass destruction against their enslavers

Supposedly they are Zandalari trolls. 
…although i’d think Island trolls like the Darkspear tribe make better logic.

Elves being descended from trolls is actually true, dark trolls affected by the magic of the well of eternity (also in vanilla Fandral gave night elves specific orders to kill trolls because he refused to accept that truth)
