im not familiar with this tool at all, or professions in general for that matter.
can anyone give me the scoop on if i can use this tool to harvest, leather, and ore with this thing in the shadow lands?
Mine is working just fine for Skinning. I haven’t yet done any other Shadowlands professions that would use it.

The Gnomish Army knife works as all profession tools (Pickaxe, skinning knife, etc). Engineers can use it to attempt a non-battle rez. Still working in SL.

does this mean i dont have to have the shadowlands skinning skill, but if i have this knife i can still skin?
Can still skin you just just won’t get the level up (since you don’t have the appropriate skill level unlocked).
If you’re asking if you can skin without the skinning skill at all with it, then no.
As Zazda pointed out, you’ll still want the Shadowlands skill or else you won’t gain points in the skill. You can still skin if you have skinning, you just won’t level the skill up if you don’t upgrade to the SL version of the skill.

No. It is not a substitute for knowing the skill. It’s the necessary tool to use the skill once you know the skill.
