Three fingers and a thumb is a tradition for many animated characters, such as Mickey Mouse and most Simpsons characters.
There are a number of explanations. I believe it’s because it simply looks better on animated characters.

I only have thumbpinky on my left hand.
I lost the other three fingers in a tragic nose picking accident.
Put the Tauren on trial as well. They suspicious as hell with 3 fingers too! Tauren and gnome both up to something

Usually easier to animate 3 fingers and a thumb than 4 fingers and a thumb. Also reason lot if Hanna Barbara characters such as yogi bear and Fred Flintstone have collars because they could separate the animation, making it easier.
