Im planning to roll a mage, debating whether I should roll a gnome for the racial or not. I definitely like the human starting zones and mount better. Should I roll a gnome purely for the racial? Will it be a big deal later along the line? (And honestly gnomes scare me…especially female ones with pink ponytails…)
If you are min/maxing, go gnome. If not, play human.

Perception is really good against rogues and feral cats. Diplomacy is great for rep grinds. Escape artist is also good against other mages, and druids. I’d say level both races as a mage to level 20, see what casting animations you like more, and then choose one; I’ve had to do that before to nail down a toon I know will still play at 60.
EDIT: As a mage, you are the best class to farm gold for your mount, and for everything. Plus portal tips, and water/food tips.

Just make a gnome and after you do coldridge valley run to elwynn via the IF train. That’s what I did.
You don’t deserve to be a gnome.
Plus 10% reputation gain is pretty nice.

Eh, it’s only good if you know they’re around so you can use it. There’s no passive effect involved. And even then most smart stealthies draw it out by letting you see them stealth and then waiting it out when you pop it.
So it’s not that useful, I’d rather have it be a weaker passive effect.
Will it make a big difference? I wouldnt say im a min/maxer but im planning to do all the raids.
Most racials aren’t important enough to base your choice on them unless you are absolutely determined to min/max.

Hmmm, guess im just gonna go human. Also would enchanting be a good profession to go? Heard its demand is going down quick. If not what are some good mage professions.
It’s an ok racial that gets some use, sure. But as a PVP racial it’s pretty far behind most in usefulness. Hardiness, stone form, will of the forsaken, war stomp, escape artist, and more are much better.

Play the race you like to look out decked in armor. In cataclysm I mained two fire mages, one Human. One Undead.
But Gnomes in classic benefit from increased base intellect, which at higher levels that extra 5% adds up with epics.
I would replace usefulness with consistency; perception is strictly situational. For some reason my Orc rarely resists stuns. Might have something to do with LRPing as a Frostwolf Clan orc.
