Would really appreciate if someone could clarify this for me as I keep finding conflicting answers.
Expansive Mind: Intelligence increased by 5%.
Does this add to your max intelligence (gear, buffs, etc.) or to only your base Intelligence?
Mage max Intelligence (450)= +.40% crit
Mage base Intelligence (120 at Lv60)= +.10% crit
Im really hoping its to total Intelligence.
Bonus question: Regarding mage pve dps. Gnome vs Troll (Berserking). Who do you think would win dps wise?
Base I believe. But I do not recall specifically.
As for bonus Q, I believe troll but not a mage person haha.

To the best of my recollection, it launched as base int but was later changed to be total int.
I don't remember whether that change had occurred by 1.12 or if it was a post-vanilla change, though.

I think that was a later change, because as I remember it all racial stats were baseline differences. Ex. Tauren get a boost to stamina, which gives them a slight edge for tanking due to the extra stamina. This small difference however became almost negligible in endgame and unless you were completely min/maxing it wasn't something that people really depended on.

Thanks for the replies! I scoured all the vanilla patches and could not see any changes to Expansive Mind. If its indeed base Int then the benefits would be 1 frostbolt crit out of 1000. In this case Trolls would have the superior mage racial.
its kind of weird to compare 'bis race' across factions. Classes may have to fill slightly different roles owing to different raid composition, or have different buffs available (Blessing of Salvation being a big difference).
You'll hardly notice the passive racials so I'd choose a race based on what you like or their on use racials.

Im just curious as far as min/maxing is concerned.

This would definitely be the case if it was just base stats. Although if it went off of total stats it would be a decent bonus.
I can't quite remember about that, But escape artist is a .5 sec cast!
Gnome beats Troll because they will have blessings.
Salvation, Kings, Wisdom.
Salvation, Kings, Wisdom.

Thats actually why im going Gnome. I actually prefer the female gnome look over any of the other races too.
Min maxing wise I'd probably go gnome, alliance has paladins and that Blessing of Wisdom will help loads mana wise. Also PVP wise not fighting another mage if you get rooted while Blink is CD you can get out via gnome racial.
good more gnomes for the punting!!!

Yeah the paladin is a huge bonus to the alliance side.
Anyone else care to chime in on the Expansive Mind base or total Int?
1.12 seems to be 5%, but blizzard can always change it to base intel
Well the Pservers seem to be using 5% at least.

Best is sneaking BoSalv on the tank. Sometimes they don't notice. The results can be humorous. Not recommended for serious content.

Im hoping this is the case. I guess we'll never truly know until classic drops.

Also seems like all the Vanilla wiki's are saying 5% too, so gnomes will dominate all casters on Alliance side besides priests (dwarfs better for fearward)

Gnomes cannot be priests anyway.
