Leveling my first mage, leveling as arcane. Im about to hit 60 so I have a good amount of spells, I thought to check the glyphs.
Imagine my dissapointment when the majority of them are water elemental appearance glyphs.
The slew of water elemental glyphs were the catalyst for the post, but beyond mage, glyphs are really lackluster for all classes.
It used to be the main driver for scribes.

This isn’t a Mage problem. The whole glyph system is a disappointment and should be receiving a whole lot more attention.

On top of that, everything is just slightly subtle shades of blue, except for one. Which is baffling because there is a variety of different shapes of WE out there.
A good glyph for arcane could be to actually make the Arcane Familiar something other than a… ball. Like the DF Dragonscale expedition leader who uses an arcane bird for a familiar.
On a tangent note, Mage is a class with some spells that date back from Vanilla without any kind of update.
- Ice Barrier (sister to the equally ancient PW:S)
- Portal visuals and Teleport casting animation
- Blink (it could use both a casting animation and updated particle effects)
- Icicles aren’t that old, but it looks really bad up close

Hey yeah your right, now that i think about it there are dozens of Water Elemental mobs throughout the years.
Maybe a familiar like a Raven or a Cat or an Arcane Golem. All of these models already exist.
Glyphs can be a good way to make each character distinct, lets up the variety and quantity for each class. I am picturing 20-30 glyphs per class, maybe targeting 5-6 spells, 4 different options per spell.
Maybe glyphs can act as dye’s too. Perhaps you want your Arcane Blasts to have red particles? I am sure that cannot be too hard to implement.
Allow the player to make thier character distinct from others of the same class.
I think the real kick in the teeth is the fact that the majority of glyphs are for Water Elemental and people don’t use it because of poor tuning. Those glyphs literally vanish into the ether.
