You picked that hat all on your own.
Because clearly he had no idea going into this game that he would have to look at the hideous toon he created. 
If you target yourself under the effect of a toy whose appearance breaks on combat and use the Ai-Li’s Skymirror toy, you copy that appearance and it won’t break on combat for 10 minutes (though you do lose it if you die). You can try that with the Wisp Amulet toy.
Having someone willing to do the Reflecting Prism Shuffle would also solve that issue.
