Up obtaining the tier set bonus to increase glacial spike damage, is it still more beneficial to cast it into a flurry or do we just send it every time?
Send it every time, shatter it whenever you can
Send it every time on single target and cleave. AOE depending on the mobs you blizzard → orb → comet → cone → Comet → Orb then you can use your glacial after, usually start doing this at 4-5 mobs.
AOE rotation starts at 3 assuming you have the talents.
Send it, but you can do things like sending a Flurry on 4 icicles, doing one ice lance, then know that you can GS into the second stack of Winter Chill instead of doing two lances.
If you have flurry proc ready and are at 5 icicles and cast GS then immediately cast flurry, does the GS also get shatter from BF or will the flurry strike after the GS, i’ve tried it but doesn’t seem to work or maybe my timing has been off?
It does not consistently shatter the GS, no, you’d have to press it like the frame it procs to get it to shatter 100% of the time and that’s just unreasonable, so don’t waste the BF proc and just send the naked GS
Assuming you aren’t standing directly in the mob/boss, and don’t have a ping of 300 then the Flurry should always hit at least one of its balls before the GS. The only reason then that it wouldn’t shatter GS is if you’re below the crit cap (which isn’t a good goal from memory as diminishing returns on stats start around 26%). If given the option to shatter a GS, you should as often as possible through any means (IN, FN, Pet, Flurry), especially in AoE when you’ll likely be sitting at 2 charges of Flurry more often than ST.
I thought the question was whether or not you can shatter a glacial with the BF proc it gives you on cast, in which case my statement is correct, otherwise yes you are right you can always shatter anything if you have a flurry cast ready
Flurry should almost always shatter the GS if cast immediately after due to faster travel time. The only possible two reasons it looks like it doesn’t is because Shatter only increases chance to crit, not guarantee, unless through procs and gear you’ve reached 34% critical strike chance, and/or maybe you’re too close that travel time is negated.
Best post in the thread about GS/Flurry. As long as you aren’t standing in melee range, the travel time of Flurry is shorter, and it should land first if you’re spamming the key during the GS cast.
If you aren’t seeing the Crit, you just got unlucky. For me, it’s about a 7-8% chance not to Crit, even when Shattered.
Tuckletuts has good info too to the same (Icy) vein.
