I may be behind when I get back, but its the right thing for me to do. Best of luck, community and catch you all in 40 days or so. Take care!
I didn’t eat meat today.
The hell is Lent
The past tense of Lend.
Thanks for your useless input
Useless questions get useless answers.
The title is, “Giving up games for Lent”. I’m asking what Lent is
I’m pretty sure if you type “Lent” into Google, you’ll get the answer to your question.
Kettle, this is Pot. Guess what he called you.
Something Christians observe. I’m not religious at all so I couldn’t tell you why. So here is Wikipedia to help you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent
Yes I looked it up, wasnt aware it was a religion. Thanks for link anyways
Lent is a Christian observance that occurs about 6 weeks from Easter, traditionally lasting 40 days. During that time, most people simply give up some kind of luxury good (video games in this case); however, you’re also supposed to be fasting and participating in some form of almsgiving during this time, which a lot of people seem to neglect doing.
Meh I grew up with it. Private / catholic school, etc. not eating meat on Fridays during Lent is normal for me.
I just eat fish or whatever. Infact I made some really good shrimp pho soup tonight for dinner.
Tomorrow’s steak dinner day.
Basically what Sierrapaw posted. Just a note, while Christians observe lent, not all sects of them do the no meat thing, fasting, or give up stuff parts. (The sect I grew up with never did any of that, you would just listen to sermons about it and that was it)
Happens when you eat too many pancakes.
You can never eat too many pancakes.
Maybe they did!
I’m Christian, but “Lent” is a made up specifically “Catholic” thing (I mean, giving up something for “Lent”.)
Wrong, Catholic.
You can be Christian and not be a Catholic, just as you can be Catholic and not even be Christian.
When I had a Catholic friend who told me about it, I thought it sounded very hypocritical.
“So, the supreme entity likes it when you give up something for a short time period? Why?”
I’m just Christian, so I can eat everything on any day
Part of the historical “hypocracy”, to me, was that they had days where they would eat up all of the stuff they could not eat during lent (such as eggs, etc., possibly.) The stuff would go bad during 40 days, so they might stuff themselves on pancakes and such.
It seems silly to me, since you can’t “fool” God. Also, why would “fish” be OK? “Fasting” is not having food, rather than having arbitrary substitutes instead (or fewer meals during the day, but they are still large meals.)
Ah, i just read that the reason why I don’t observe this is that Martin Luther/John Calvin were abolishing “works” since stressing salvation by Grace alone. So the more Protestant/whatever Christian religions have members who might fast privately, but it isn’t a regulation.
Also, though a Christian, I was rather ignorant of putting “ash” on your head on Ash Wednesday (since again, the literal doing of it is more of a Catholic thing.) So even when I was in my early 20’s, I saw a guy at work and said, “Hey, a smudge or something is on your head…” He became rather offended.
Well that’s just weird and now I am slightly scared that there are people out there who limit their pancake intake.
More specifically Catholics I believe. I’ve never known any protestants who participate in lent.
