Ghosts don't make sense now, thanks to Shadowlands

Why didn’t the Alliance remember to use the Vindicaar in BfA? Blizz seemingly pulled Shadowlands out of thin air. This entire realm of the dead no one knew about until we stepped foot in it seems unreasonable. Especially since we’ve had interactions with spirits since the very start of WoW. It also doesn’t help that none of what we are experiencing feels like it represents life and the culture on Azeroth.

Tripartite/bipartite debates are a thing in the Christian world. The early church fathers in the first few centuries believed that the spirit and the soul were two different things along with the body, distinguishing between pneuma and psyche.

Everything doesnt make sense on a fantasy world. Why to Plate Armor Wearers float on a water? How do all my 50 mounts fit on my bag?

can’t help but to agree with a lot of this.

my favorite NPC line from the tyrande story so far was “Meh, the dead mother trope is just lazy writing”

like…was that actual shots fired from within? do we have talented writers that are just being told what to write? i need answers

Gameplay conveniences and story/lore consistency are not the same thing.

it wouldn’'t be the first time they retconned what the shadowlands is.

we’ve visited it a few times in past quests and it was literally just shadow-y lands that ghosts and other death entities hung out in.

When stories go out to explain too much they get way too convoluted. There is richness in mystery and Blizzard lost a lot of the mystery that made the world. I really wish we could retcon this nonsense but unfortunately we’re stuck here.

i don’t really recall him being convince of anything, i recall him begging to not bet taken and us forcing him to relive his past so we see how he died.

spirit healers, if they really have anything to do with bastion, are just a retcon mess that makes the lore make less sense.

The four main locations in Shadowlands aren’t the only afterlife locations. Some of the others may be for the hungry dead, the realm of battle and the realm of ancestors (also referred to as Preta-gati or Meido, Toshigoku from L5R, and literally any version of heaven).

These other locations may not be as guarded over their spirits as the others are, especially if those other afterlives don’t care about rebirth.

This is all assuming, and I am loathe to say it… That Sylvanas is not in the right, and that this is ‘how’ Death is supposed to work. What if this whole thing we’re seeing is not how Death is actually supposed to function, but rather is a massive band-aid that was created when Zovaal rebelled the first time? Like a… Cosmic level “Sundering” or “Cataclysm” dealt to the realm of Death?

Like you know, they keep talking about the Machine of Death. If that’s the Arbiter, what was it like when Zovaal was still on the right side of the Force? Could it perhaps have been very, very different? I suspect it was.

Hard to say without some more lore shown to us on that matter.

I assume more will be forthcoming at Zereth Mortis.

I am no longer following the sadolands lore.
I don’t expect anything in this xpac to be important, make sense of anything, or mean anything.
I just want to forget about this dreadful xpac and its destructive and bad lore.

Remember the elder in pandaren introduction quests?

He volunteered to become a ghost and stayed a ghost.

Also many dead pandaren have spirits.

For example like emperor shaohao

We haven’t seen all the afterlife yet, just part of it. We’re in the sort of purgatory part.

I had this thought playing through a quest that had me talking to Uther’s spirit. In the timeline of the game, he would have already been a Kyrian. Ahhhh, Shadowlands really does suck.

necro’s on post about ghosts…style points given!

My vision for the wrath classic redo was they could have fixed that.

Replace the Uther we see with emo rage boy in a toga. same for legion. Lore fixed.

Nope.

There are so many easy retcons to fix the mess that Shadowlands made of the lore. Instead they’ll likely just ignore the new plot holes or handwave them.

Lore team got lazy, or just didn’t feel like sifting through over 20 years worth of lore to make sure everything made sense. Boo.

Also, I’m always going to necro instead of making a new post. Makes more sense. I’m an archeologist after all.

We um… just gonna ignore that anima, the stuff of souls, evidently has solid mass and properties and can be eaten by people or whatever? Or is compatible with Maldraxxi undead who are physical undead? Because they have souls…then they construct a corpse shell AROUND the soul and can revive as long as a body is available…

I mean it explains WHY we can punch ghosts like Danny freakin Phantom, but at the same time… still makes my brain hurt.

HERNE.EXE has crashed…
