Level 30 toons, log in basically every day for the last 2 weeks. Just started getting “Gear Update” prompts. Why?

This seems to happen when you log in on a different realm than the character is on. If you switch to its realm, the update messages will go away. If you say to continue logging in without the gear update, it will switch over to that realm and log in normally. If you cancel, you can’t take the supposed gear update unless, again, you log into the character’s realm - but when you do that, the option to do it will not be available. So the bug is not that you actually can get a gear update when you shouldn’t, it’s just that it says you have one when you really don’t. At least that’s how it’s been working for me.
Edit: today when it happened, it was my first login after maintenance. Not sure if that was the case with previous times I’ve seen this.
Edit 2: also possibly relevant, I believe my affected character (Renson-Earthen Ring) this time did have a gear update recently, maybe since patch 11.0 but I am not sure. She definitely has a lot of Heart-Lesion gear, which is the DK boost/update/class trial set, so she did at some point, I just can’t remember when.
