For several months now I’ve been receiving several spam bs whispers a day/night/many hour gaming session.
Every time, they are in asian characters, and so I can’t even tell you what they are even about! And its always a new character name so it’s not like I can ignore a player.
It happens on all of my characters as far as i can tell. The character names do tend to seem random bot like. As in, they’re all from a rando name generator and fit a generic pattern a computer may have come up with, too, so i can usually tell this bs from someone actually talking.
Not the worst thing ever, it’s just kind of annoying, I see a pst pop up and instead of anything i could ever care about from a guildy or someone in the area, it’s just bs. Sometimes I’ll get a few in an hour.
I asked in trade chat (I know a classic mistake, hah, but…) if anyone else had received the same messages and, of course, all I got was a “nope, its just you :)”, which is entirely useless and vaguely dismissive (if ya got nothin to REALLY say, don’t say nothin?) , so here, has anyone else received these? And if so, how do i stop them? Or any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
That’s absolutely bizarre. I’ve never run into that. I get the incredibly annoying guild whispers but that sounds like a whole new level. Did you make enemies with someone who would like to eff with ya?
Do you get these whispers only while playing a specific character, or on any character?
If it’s the first, maybe it’s someone who is mistaking you for someone else. Another possibility is that they are trying to harass you into doing a name change to escape this torment, freeing up the name for themselves because they want it.
If it’s the second, it could mean a battle.net friend was hacked. Someone with access to their account could just be sending spam messages to everyone on their friends list to try luring them to phishing sites, but could be forgetting to run their message through google translate first.
Next time, try screenshotting the whisper and see if you can get someone to translate the message to confirm if it’s really a scam or just someone trying to make conversation.
It sounds like gold sellers to me. New ones, maybe.
That is bizarre. I haven’t noticed anything like it in my many years of playing WOW.
I have one suggestion you might try, if it isn’t too inconvenient. Try playing at a different time and see if the whispers go away. I used to play a warship game that was very popular with Asians. Many came on between midnight and 2am East Coast US time.
They were friendly enough and their chats with each other using their native alphabet didn’t bother me. (However, they had two groups of proven cheaters. During tournaments their leaders intentionally sent 1 or 2 players to the other side to sink ships with friendly fire and call out ship movement locations).
For me, it’s always a misspelled “Blizzard” trying to get me to go put my log-in info into some shady website, or else they’ll ban me!
…and then I laugh, and laugh, and laugh and hit “report”.
Same for me. 9/10 random whispers I get are asking me to port them somewhere.
Hey, hey you, would you like some spam? Its still in an unopened tin. Spam
Has your account ever been “compromised”, then used in far east farming operations?
Did you then get it back somehow, from Blizzard?
Maybe it is people who don’t know, saying things like “Thad, is that you? You are WAYYYY behind on the quota!”
Go to Google Translate and type in, “Go away and leave me alone” in Chinese. Paste it over as a reply.

I also got whispers from Chinese players twice (on a different day, on different characters) recently.
I had no idea what they were saying the first time, but I took a screenshot the second time I got it, and saw the words “+15” and “H/M” so I’m assuming they are trying to sell M+ and Heroic/Mythic raid carries.
I just whispered them back gibberish Chinese.

I’ve not had that, but I have seen the Chinese messages flooding trade on some realms. I spent so much time reporting and it never stopped so I turned trade off on all toons across all servers.
I really Hope blizzard has another clean out soon.
pretty sure they were saying “a turtle made it to the water”

It is on all characters, predominately at night it seems (got 3 in the span of an hour last night).
And my account was compromised several years ago but I got it back quick. There are so many factors, I guess I might just tell them to go away when it happens but seems there’s nothing much really to be done for a solid fix.
Thank you all for your input!
Blizzard laid off all the people who dealt with the spammers and whispers. I’ve been getting more and more too.
I got the whispers pretty late at night as well. One of my guildie said he got one when he was in middle of a BG.
We never got hacked before so I don’t think you have to worry about whether it is related to your account being compromised.
It’s just Chinese people doing annoying Chinese things.
okay so you need the addon blockchinese. if you play on realms like illidan you would know about this addon bC its been going no there for about a year or so but it seems now they are going to less realms now so just download the addon and call it a day
also download badboy when you’re at it
btw they are just gold selling or selling runs in no way is your account compromised
I thought the same. I was hoping that someone on here who can read Chinese happen to take a look at the screenshot I posted above and let us know what they’re saying.
