Back in Burning Crusade and WoTLK I was our guilds main tank (Pally), but I didn’t play during Mists, Warlords, Legion, Shadowlands or Dragonflight.
I wasn’t a fan of them as expansions…
Now back into War Within and I have 3 tanks currently, DK, Warrior and Guardian (Only used guardian to gear for resto)
While going through Delves is easy mode, I find it difficult to get back into tanking Mythics and Raids… most likely my issue is I’ve been away from the game for so long and coming back in is a new learning curve…
Anyone else struggle to get back into tanking after a “leave of absence” so to speak?
Thoughts? Advice?
The easiest advice is just look up a guide online by someone who plays the class at a very high level. For M+ you’ll need to look up route guides.
Coming back after that long as tank is the hardest way to do it. You’re almost better off going in as a dps and getting a feel for the the routing/pacing then swapping back over to tank.
I came back to playing last season after a long break, and my main is a tank. Straight up, the best way to get back into it is to throw yourself into it. It may take you a while to build yourself up again, but there is a lot of stuff you’re going to have to learn including dungeons, mob abilities, routes, interrupts, boss mechanics etc. that you are just going to have to learn through experience.
You should read your spec abilities to see how they work, but beyond that I’m not really an advocate of reading guides because, at least for me, they don’t really translate into actual muscle memory. Playing the game does.
If you want to get into mythics I would make sure you’re running heroics first just to get used to tanking and your abilities and rotation again, and then just start grinding up from +2. You are going to have to learn the dungeon pool from scratch and get a feel for all of them until you’re comfortable with them.
Best advice is to grow thick skin, you are always the first to blame if anything goes wrong. 2nd get used to the Mythic Dungeon tools addon, 3rd make your routes but dont be afraid to change them as you progress because your routes will change the higher you go. 4th, don’t be afraid to dps a key or 2 to see what other tanks do.
Yolo through a Heroic Dungeon a few times till you figure out how the buttons work. Learn by doing. Oh, and turn off the chat window before you queue.
What are you finding difficult? It would help for people giving advice to know what you are having trouble with.
Class mechanics, routes, pace, content mechanics, performance anxiety?
