Genuine question: What's the appeal?

This is a genuine question. What is the appeal to battlegrounds?

I used to love battlegrounds, fyi. I’m not a hater on them. Infact, I prefer them over arena’s any day. But they don’t feel rewarding in the slightest… even in bg blitz, where everything is somewhat scaled, it is always one side doing better.

And it doesn’t really matter wether I am on the winning or losing side, because this discussion isn’t about that. Because even when I win, it doesn’t feel rewarding. It just feels like we steamrolled the other team and they had no fighting chance.

So again… what’s the appeal?

I feel like blitz is way more balanced than randoms or epics and I enjoy bgs more than arena that’s why I like it. Also it’s easy to cap with it giving conquest for close losses.

Believe me Thats the opinion of many long time players. Most of it is anyway except the arena part. arena is better imo at least you are not going to queue into a premade 10 man vs random group of people. just 2 or 3 :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I play for fun, because I love pvp. Getting conquest is secondary. The appeal for me is a game like this one that we just pulled off. We only had a small team in there. I love when we turn things around, even sometimes when it feels like a loss, don’t give up! I can’t post links anymore, so h ttps://imgur.com/a/iHJJkb5

If it doesn’t appeal to you, then there’s nothing we can say that could make you change your mind.

It’s like doing addictive drugs. When you squeak out a win by capping a node in the last moments or capping a flag or returning one. Those little inches and seconds count. And no game is the same. It’s all about adjusting on the fly. A good strategy at the start a great but that can go out the window thirty seconds into the bg.
I’ve raided since nilla. I’ve done arena. But bgs and Rbgs are the best because wins are hard earned. This all when the game is Que. but all the other stufff ruins it. Waiting on a bear tank, fotm classes, pre-made communities in non-rated bgs….i don’t mention or include epics in this. Epics are basically kindergarten PvP.

Objective based PVP, not like arena pillar humping madness for a kill.

Raid size, 10-40man groups fighting each other in a huge battlefield.

Isn’t this always supposed to be the case, except for the occasional draw?

If you dont know the appeal after doing it with about the best gear you can have that season, it doesnt appeal to you, and thats ok.

Maybe when TWW has it be rated content it will appeal to you, if it still dosent that is fine. Just choose to do something else.

100% Blitz is way more balanced.

I will note, however that healers having the option to queue with a friend can skew the system. The level playing field becomes noticeably pushed in favour to the team that has more joining pairs than the one without.

Last night, I played a few where the other team had joining pairs, while ours had none, and the response to our movement was so much faster than ours. I’m not sure I like that people can bring a friend. It unlevels the playing field and takes out the purpose of it being random.

I can see a need to fine tune the duo Que part.

For me it’s combat mechanics and gear progression. Even if gear is scaled, I like that my PvE item level grows, and PvP item level is useful for normal BGs.

Combat mechanics and smoothness in WoW are unmatched, so just experiencing that is fun.

Blitz also solved the most annoying parts of normal BGs, namely faction bias, pace of rewards, round length.

Play pvp long enough in a season and you end up with max gear, you collect all the xmogs, you have max currency and are finding creative ways to get rid of it at a bit of a profit.

So that stuff is nice. But, when it comes down to it, random/epic bgs are just random people who Q up with no preconditions, anyone can do it, yah never know what ya gonne get. The Q’s are 5 minutes, press Q button, do whatever in game (I like gathering sometimes), accept when it pops to enter and pvp. Epics bgs are up to 40v40, there is 10v10, etc etc etc…easy peasy video game fun in a massive world with other players.

Really, the only thing you end up with in WoW PvP eventually is the WoW PvP.

It’s that simple.

That is the appeal.

Must agree w/the talking mound of hair, muscle, and metal here…Blitz being sans potions/flasks def evens the playing field where a reasonably geared pug group doesn’t always get stomped.

There is always going to be a winner and a loser. If it seems there is always one side better, then start a premade, find people that can read the forum, watch youtube videos, read strats, go to the blizzard forum here and see what is going on and how to win the game over another team. Then all of a sudden you will be the new hated premade team everyone wants to complain about…

I would start a premade and darn it we would win every game in Pug pvp’s anything. I just don’t want to play any rated pvp…

We would eraticate anything team…

What do you mean exactly by balanced?

If you mean character balanced, sure. Because every gear is kind of equalized… I can jump into Blitz with no gear and still beat a geared individual because they have some kind of scaling going on.

As for balancing match-making wise… Blitz is terrible. Too often does it happen that one team overwhelms the other. I can’t pin on why. Sometimes, it feels my entire team is just NPC’s while other times it feels like I’m fighting against a team of NPC’s.

And for those claiming there’s always a winner and a loser…

There’s a huge difference in being roflstomped into oblivion by your opponent and just losing. (Or roflstomping your oponent into oblivion and being a winner). Some matches feel like I’m either part of some premade or I’m matched against a premade. Literally zero chance to make a difference, despite gear, despite 2-3 people trying to communicate and salvage the situation.

I’m gonna guess that what Mohawk said is the cause of that. But it’s whatever.

As for PvP… I’ve been playing it since Shadowlands now. Arena’s and bg blitz. I really like the idea of PvP but the execution of it always lets me down.

If I win a battleground or a 1v1 open world pvp in Season of Discovery, it feels 100% more rewarding than doing any of that in retail at the moment.

I mean it’s balanced like at least we have 2 healers on both sides and no premade roflstomps. I do agree sometimes you just get more potatoes on one side or the other but I feel they will iron a lot of that out.

I think it’s way more fun than arenas, don’t get me wrong arena’s are neat, but having fights without the reliance of healers is way more fun than running around pillars and healer battles. Outside of that I think fighting a player is way more exciting than fighting an A.I mob, sometimes raiding is a head bobbing snooze fest.

PvP is fun. Arenas are alright, but I enjoy a mode with a wider variety of objectives than just beating on dudes for ~10min, and more map interesting maps.

As far as material rewards, yeah BGs are absolutely lacking. They should probably look into that.

Well yeah that’s how competitive game modes work lol. Do you feel like the ideal scenario is 90% of games end in a draw?

I get plenty of close games. Maybe rather than judging how one sided the majority of your BGs are by feelings, actually track them. People tend to feel bad experiences more than good / neutral ones.

The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see those dear to them bathed in tears, to clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters.
