Genn Greymane was the Alliance's MVP during the Fourth War

I think one of the reasons people like Genn is because, even though he’s not terribly complicated, he’s still a more nuanced character than many of his contemporaries. He’s shown himself to be incredibly loyal to those he trusts, like Varian and Anduin, but he’s also brash, impulsive, and reckless. He helped Rogers in Stormheim even when, objectively, it was probably the wrong play.

Compare that to characters like Anduin and Velen, who are both compassionate, wise, understanding, tolerant, and whose worst character flaws amount to “they just care too darned much.” One-dimensional characters are fine, if all they’re being used for is extras to drive a scene forward. They don’t work as well when they’re the focus of the story.

It’s the same reason I hate Nathanos. He’s one-note, and he’s boring. The snarky, condescending, rude personality would be fine if it was paired with some genuine character traits, maybe show us another side of the character. When this is the sort of bar that’s been established, it’s not hard for someone like Genn to suddenly seem much more developed, and people are drawn to that.

Yeah, he’s one of the more realistically written characters in the lore.

He also saved the universe when he ruined Sylvanas’ plans during Legion.

And he gets actual character development. He’s made a lot of mistakes but he grows and learns from. He can also admit when he is wrong on occasion.

Unlike the Golden Boy.

He’s the only “human” character in the entire Alliance.
Tyrande, Malfurion, and Anduin don’t hold a hecking candle.
