Hi everybody - two general questions about multi-threading and DX12 in WoW.
So I have a i9-7900x with 10 ten cores. In the current version of WoW, do I need to do anything to activate full multi-threading optimization within the game for all ten cores in settings or anything like that?
How much gain is there beyond 4 cores and, even, beyond 10? If I literally didn’t care the money, will I get tremendous scaling if I went up to 16-20 cores, or not really?
If you make sure the game is set to use dx12, it will use your CPU the best it can. No more needs to be done on your end.
Even with dx12 and improved usage of multiple cores, single core performance is still far and away most important. The game still relies mostly on one core, but puts a decent load on a couple more. Increasing cores above 4 is going to do basically nothing for the game, it may help if you stream or something while you play though.
Wow basically uses a single core/thread to run the game. It will spread a bit of work around others. Still far from optimal for todays multi thread processors. I don’t know of any game that can take advantage of much more than 4 cores.
The 7900x is a decent single thread processor. There are better. If you are game what might help is an overclock. Overclocks tend to bump single core performance fast.
Thanks very much. If money is no object, what is the literal fastest CPU I can buy specifically for Warcraft and, if you had to guess, how much FPS would it give me over my current 7900x?
basically just follow this chart. higher the better.
this writeup is good too if you’d prefer a list with some explanation.
in short, 9900k is the best that money can buy for warcraft and gaming in general.
hard to say how much improvement in fps you’d see. maybe 10-15%, something around there. someone who has made a similar upgrade could give a better estimate. it would be more noticeable in cpu bound activities, like raids, than elsewhere.
Sorry for the delay - so I have an Asus Prime X299-A.
I have no problem side-grading to the i9-9900x and a matching board that I found from Asus. Also, it wouldn’t cost anything as I can sell my old chip and board for more than a i9-9900x and matching board, and I don’t really need those 2 extra cores that badly
However, I just want to make sure this will be worth the effort. I suspect it would as I have a friend with the i9-7900x too at work, and when he OC’d his chip even just 0.1-0.2ghz he got like 20-30fps higher in all areas. However, i want to confirm you suspect this is true too
I think i9-9900x goes up to 4.7ghz on all cores, and 5.0ghz on 1-2 cores, versus I can only get my current chip up to 4.1-4.2ghz without heat concerns.
Will I see a big improvement over my current figures? I have a 1080TI and a very high end machine, but I want to get up to 10/10/10 with max settings at 1440p and consistent 60fps if this can get me there, I will do it. right now I lag below that in dense scenes like Stormwind, flying above the Goldshire trees or in new legion and BFA zones
