Secondary stat are extremely powerful, even more so than primary stats. When it comes to the WF/TF debate on whether it should or should not be in the game and the random power gains it gives, gem sockets are largely overlooked.
Currently gem slots give a much larger power gain for most classes in the game than if an item instead warforged or even titanforged.
Here’s a post I made on this gain earlier:
This is why I think gems should have other contributions other than just primary or secondary stats. I think those types of gems should be removed and remade into something else and something more interesting.
I feel it would be a much better use of gems to bring back the colors of the sockets to match the gems. Bring back the socket bonuses. Instead of flat stats, make gems provide tertiary stats. You’re playing a tank that struggles with magic damage and have some gem slots? Gem some magic resist. Bring back the hybrid gems.
The dev’s obviously want to explore new gear options with cool effects like what we see coming in the new raid. Why not make cool gems from the content that offer unique effects associated with those instances or zones?
Uldir could have had some cool leech gems or disease/plague effects.
Battle for Dazar’alor could have made better use of the Opulence gems idea here.
The new raid could have some cool old god effects come from gems that come from the raid.
The two new zones coming in 8.2 could have themed gems (from reps, content, etc).
Each of the 10 (11 soon) dungeons could have a gem that drops with a cool effect reflecting the dungeon they came from.
I’ve seen a few people say that as well. That either there should be fixed pieces with gem slots on them or it’s not random and base gear can’t contain gem slots but we are able to add them some how. There’s a few ways to go about it. The problem with gems providing “combat” stats aka primary and secondary stats, is that is grows the imbalance between them further.
It’s just another layer of RNG that isn’t needed in the game. You already have WF/TF, sockets, tertiary stats, not to mention if the socket lands on a piece that’s more useful like bracers. It’s too much.
I remember when gems were relevant. Those were the days. Every expac post BC has eroded their relevance. Now it’s so rare to get a socketed item they may as well just delete Jewelcrafting and meld it into the remaining professions and call it a day. Gone the way of First aid it has.
@Val. I agree. This is part of a larger problem of Blizzard introducing systems - gemming, glyphs, guild perks, gnome-cuteness etc. and failing to maintain them.
Let them put slots on all gear (for a decent cost), including heirlooms, with a limit of 1 slot per piece of gear
Add in more combat and utility gems that are useful in more aspects of the game, such as scaling XP boost gems, gems that impact things like gathering or speed, or gems that add additional combat effects.
Currently JC is extremely lacklustre since getting slots is a RNG thing, and the only gems that mean anything just affect secondaries and that’s it. Even the XP gem is worthless since getting a slot while levelling is nigh impossible.
That’s not true, I regularly see people with many gem slots. Of course, this is my experience in the context of how I play the game and at the level I do.
