Gearing druid

Something I’d been wondering since reading a lot of more recent druid threads. Just how easy is it to gear a druid for feral/tanking. I know about the helm and crowd pummel. What about Competing with rogues or other classes ? Will it take forever since other classes get main priority ? Or since there a fewer druids would most gear go to you ?

I am not against healing, may even focus entirely on healing however the draw to druid is the option for other play styles so I was curious if it’s a reality at all.

Having a heal button makes you last in line for dps gear. However, if you take enchanting and tell them you need the shard, you might move up to next-to-last in line.

A lot of the good feral tanking pieces are items that Rogues or Furies won’t even want (Trash chest in BWL for example and even if they take it’s a trash item so it’s not exceptionally rare). Items like DFT will be off the table for most druids though early on but as a tank you want armor trinkets if possible anyways.

I guess another thing I didn’t consider is, does leather working give you an early advantage for pre bis?

Warbear Armor from Tribal Leatherworking is good for feral tanking. Enchanting gets you a trinket with armor on it which makes it good for tanking. (Smoking Heart of the The Mountain). It’s a BoP item as well

Enchanting actually gives better tanking gear than does leatherworking

You’re better off gearing for Bear tanking rather than cat DPS. At least you’ll be wanted in the precious raid over a cat.

If you’re that bent on cat DPS, then you need to learn powershifting. You simply cannot stay as a cat the entire time.

I’m familiar with the powershifting. Actually adds some complexity to the dps. Buy I’m strictly looking to be the biggest asset possible so heal and gear for tank/dps if that’s a chance

Gearing isn’t as hard as organizing and maintaining the required bag space for tank, dps, and healing sets.

And Dracarian is clueless when he says having a healing button makes you last for gear. If your dps are underperforming and you out perform often you may see more. On top of that it is guild dependent. Don’t listen to someone that clueless about loot distribution.

Professions are fun, but after obtaining what you need from the other professions you will want engineering like anyone else. Enchanting is great for an awesome trinket that is great for a long time. Leatherworking gets you some nice pieces and woflshead helms will sell.

As stated you’ll get more opportunities as a tank than dps, but you’ll get even more spots if you can play all three roles. Check out Skarm Tank on YouTube for some good info on druid tanking and Shendthedruid for good cat dps info. For cat you must learn powershifting, energy tick tracking, MCP usage, etc. I’m still learning healing myself as I’ve always been a feral and in Vanilla I was a noob bear.

Don’t let negative people discourage you from playing a druid. Find a guild looking for a feral off tank. I’m currently set as the third tank behind two warriors in my guild. However, I’ve been reminded I will be healing when needed and only dpsing when I’m not needed for tanking/decursing. But seriously go check those two guys I talked about out! Lots to absorb information wise!

ah cool, thanks

Cool spreadsheet, though. I find it really funny how it rates Wolfshead Helm. The amount of Energy it refunds when you shapeshift in and out of cat form adds a huge amount of DPS, but it’s variable based on the rest of your gear and how good you are at powershifting.

0.0 DPS isn’t a good way to describe it. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I would suggest checking out Taladril’s Guide on druid tanking. It has a lot of good information in it for anyone interested in feral tanking, it also includes a spreadsheet with gearing for healer, tank, and cat dps.

Just remove the space between the . and com (can’t post links)

I know you’re most likely talking about endgame… But I think I remember that until level 40 you share gear with rogues, hunters, and shamans. I think only warriors could wear mail until then and there was no plate under 40. Could be wrong about levels.

Still share with them after too, the stats are more important than higher armor.

Gearing up is problematic in Classic. Blizzard eventually fixed the problem but it’s in full force in Classic. The problem? Plate wearers can and do any kind of gear. Mail wearers can wear mail and below. Leather wearers can wear leather and below. Poor priests, mages and warlocks can only wear cloth. So basically, cloth wearers are constantly having their gear taken by everybody else. Leather wearers the same except they aren’t quite as bad off as priests, mages and warlocks. Let the tears and teeth grinding commence.
