Do what I do. Ask openly and honestly and set the expectation that you want to learn and have an open dialogue. You aren’t there to change minds nor do you necessarily want/need your mind changed but you want to learn.
I know it’s hip to say people-especially in this day and age-are conditioned to be made “uncomfortable”.
But speaking specifically to related, recent events I can say that as long as you are willing to listen honestly, I’ve never been made to feel uncomfortable by people who ‘don’t look like me’. In fact, I’ve been made to feel more than welcome to ask, learn, and even be critical.
More often, it’s the people that do look like me that seem intent on doing so and it drives them up a wall when I’m not.
TL,DR: Be fearless, let people know upfront about your intentions, why you wish to talk and have a conversation. Do not expect to change minds but be open to learning.

Being slow on “shipping” is not a bad thing. Being a writer and thinking of original characters is one thing. IMO fanfic (and shipping), while good practice for the novice and is almost always best left unpublished, is basically just lazy and ripping off the original creator.

True. I do recommend it if you’re new and not super confident in your own character creating skills.
A LOT of my ocs were originally other characters I wrote fanfics of but after time of putting some of my own ideas into those characters, they kinda splintered off into their own thing. Because after time I was getting more confident and creative with my ideas and wanting to see them.
