pretty sure it’s month by month
once you’ve farmed this months currency, that’s it.
you need to wait until next month to earn progress towards next months rewards
(edit for clarity) you can’t earn progress beyond the 1000 each month, any currency you don’t spend rolls over.

yep, you can save it or spend it, or a bit of both.
From the article:
This means that you can earn a maximum of 1,000 
Trader’s Tender every month, except for the first month where you can earn 2000! Trader’s Tender will carry over from month to month if you don’t spend it.
