Games where you play as a dragon

I googled this today and found surprisingly few results.

Fire and Steel looked interesting so I’m downloading it on Steam. I would have thought that playing as a dragon would be a big draw. Maybe it will bring some new people into World of Warcraft.

I will look into that.

Unfortunately a lot of Dragon games just… suck. I don’t know why, but with precious few exceptions, many of which are very old and discontinued(Breath of Fire), it seems every time I pick up something where the theme is, “you’re a dragon” or “you’re explicitly draconic in a significant way” the result is disappointing.

… another reason I’m particularly weary of Dragonflight.

You mean like you’re draconic that means you can only be 1 class and only 2 roles out of the triad?

Istaria - MMO where you are a dragon. Start as a young dragon, grow at various stages. To where you are flying as a dragon, even have your own mountain den, with the ability to also mass a hoard. The game itself is really dead, but is soloable. The crafting, harvesting, and building systems are well done. I find myself on there every now and then to play my account of dragons. I think the game also lets you play free dragons now, up to level 5 or 10. The game itself is F2P, the dragon race/class used to be sub only though. Also has 10 other races and a ton of classes.

Day of Dragons - I would be careful about this one, the devs are iffy at best. The content updates are insanely rare. Most people say this is still just another kickstarter scam. The game itself is a dragon survival. You are hatched from an egg. Grow. Become an adult. Become an elder dragon. There is very little in the way of content. AKA not much to even fight. PvP servers, ganking is rampant. The grow cycle is painfully slow, even more so with next to nothing to do in this game. Added to steam in 2019, and still in early access. The first actual dragon they worked on for the game was a DLC. If that tells you something. They are supposedly working on more dragons, but who knows what it will happen. Everything in this game is flipped assessed from other sources at the moment.

Skyrim and ARK - These games, by default you cannot play as the dragons in them. With mods though, you can.

Partially, but also not as specific as that.

Take Divinity: Ego Draconis - the dragon part is very, very poorly done, shallow, tedious, and subject to awful controls and ruinous gameplay paradigms.

Others just have bad writing, cheap graphics, or bad gameplay loops. Even if they get the dragon part even slightly right, everything else goes wrong.

I hope Dragonflight breaks this paradigm, both because WoW desperately needs another homerun expansion, and because, damn it, I want a good dragon game for once.

I agree. I really want Dragonflight to be awesome, or at the least, a well liked expansion. You can’t please everyone, but SL didn’t really please anyone.

I did enjoy the Eternity End stuff however.

I am looking forward the the Dracthyr and also the Dragonflight system. And I’m hoping they keep tossing us revamps and new cosmetics because it’s always great to get new stuff and cosmetics and revamps have to be easier to do than new content to tide us over till Dragonflight and perhaps between major patches.

Love Dragons! I haven’t booted up the Fire and Steel game I found on Steam yet but I will after work.

I love dragons, and I am SUPER excited for the Dracthyr, I even went and checked out fire & steel since you mentioned it, and it looks like a lot of fun, so I bought it and it’s downloading right now.

Thank you for the suggestion my fellow dragon friend ^.^

There was a D&D game where you flew a dragon up the screen and breathed firey stuff on the 8 bit NES. I want to say it was even called Dragonflight but I could be wrong. Also Dragon Spirits was a game just like it, and probably if anything more popular cause it was also in the arcade.

Also I believe, and I’m not sure because I wasn’t playing then, that EQ had an expansion where playing a dragon in kind of a sideways alt format was a thing. I think.

There’s just something inherently wrong with playing an overly large creature though, I find. Games that have given me that are usually clunky. I’m looking at you PS4 Godzilla.

Let’s see in Oblivion my best friend turns into a dragon and chomps on the bad guy. Then in Skyrim I get to have cool looking dragon armor as well as speak the dragon language.

Yeah that’s all I got

I turn into this in WoW

Eh… I’m immediatley skeptical, because the entire pitch seems kind of lame.

So was shadowlands for that matter.

But I really don’t know how they can make an entire expansion very interesting off of just “OH BOY! DRAGONS!!! LOOK AT HOW COOL THESE DRAGONS ARE!!! DONT YOU LOVE DRAGONS?!”

Like I enjoy dragons, but if that’s the entire expansion, I’m not staying around.

The Dracthyr are Dead on Arrival.
They can only be one class, and It’s not a class I care about.

So like pandas…DOA or worse

 :dragon:  :dragon:  :dragon:

Nope, I love pandas. They can be plenty of classes.
The Pandas have also been around since WC3, So they seemed like a fine addition to me.

Also, The Dracthyr look like they can only be Humans or Elves in their Visage form. Which is incredibly lame.

If Pandas could ONLY be monks, and Monks could ONLY be pandas. I’d agree. DOA.

So do I. It’s remarkably underwhelming since it feels just like a mount except my character is not riding it. Feels more like I’m absent somehow than I’m the dragon, tbh.

But what if Drakthyr could be Pandas? I mean a dragon should choose whatever form it wants

 :dragon:  :dragon:

If mounted combat were a thing, turning into a dragon (or even just riding one) would be infinitely cooler.

As it stands, all mounts are just meaningless vanity with no utility beyond motion.
