Games "updating" every single time I close them

I’ve been having this issue for months now. I’ve tried fresh installs of both the Battle net app and the games themselves. Every single time I close a game it will start updating, it takes about 30-50 secs for it to finish and then I can play it again. Is there any known fix for this?

I’ve had the same problem for months as well. Started out of the blue. It will even “update” constantly after I close out Bnet, and as I am browsing the internet, every 5 minutes or so I’ll get a pop up in the bottom right of my screen that says “World of Warcraft has been updated”. It drives me nuts but I have no idea where to begin fixing this.

It is likely a permission issue. By default, The Battle.net app will set custom permissions for the entirety of the World of Warcraft folder wherever you have it installed. If you, or any third party software alters any permission on one or more files/folders, this triggers the Battle.net app to “correct” the problem. It may fail and you end up in an “update” loop.

You can verify this by doing the following:

  • Go to C:\ProgramData\Battle.net\Agent\Agent.####\Logs
  • Open the most recent AgentErrors-<datetime>.log text file.
  • You may see lines that contain fix_permissions.

You can correct this by doing the following:

  • Close Battle.net and any games.
  • Delete the contents of C:\ProgramData\Battle.net\Agent\Agent.####\Logs
  • Start the Battle.net app as an administrator.
  • It should automatically correct issues but if not, verify each game you have installed.
  • Double check to make sure you don’t have any software that will later modify the permissions.

This didn’t seem to work. I have the game installed on an external drive since my computer has a small SSD. Would I need to do anything different because of that?

The speed of an external drive will be well below an internal one and I would not recommend this setup.

I’ve been having this issue for the last week or two as well. It only takes like 30 seconds but it’s annoying that it happens every single time. I’ve tried running both the game and launcher app as administrator, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app. It still happens regardless.
