I think, after I turned 14, ever since, gaming, in general, has felt like a chore. It doesn’t matter what game I play. I don’t feel the need to finish a game because it is fun, but because I just want to get it done and over with. I don’t feel satisfied for long after I get over a difficult hurdle. If anything, I feel devoid after, like a “that’s it…?” type feeling.
I WANT to like gaming so bad, but nothing has been fun since I was 14.
That happens to me sometimes. I’m MUCH older than 14 lol (in my 40s), but essentially when I hit that point where nothing is fun anymore, I find something else to do. Yard work, home repairs, do some computer programming, something that’s not gaming. Then I eventually play a game, it’s either not really fun, and I just keep doing other stuff, or it’s fun, and ta-da! I like games again.
Also, on the other hand, stress and depression can make nothing be fun, so make sure you’re good, and if not, figure out why not!
Stop playing games to “beat” them and start playing them for things like exploration. And try new things in the game you usually avoided in the past because you didn’t think you’d like them. Most of the time it’s just pure laziness preventing people from doing those other things, but they don’t want to admit it. Yes, I know there are a few things none of us like, but most people are stubborn mules and won’t bother giving those things an honest try.
Or you can wait until A.I. evolves a bit more and gives us our own personalized experiences within these games that are different than what everyone else is getting. This can be in the form of getting interesting loot or opening up new random things to explore.
I play games to have fun above all else, or maybe for a specific story experience, but if the game is just straight-up boring, I won’t even try to beat it. I tried all kinds of games I thought I wouldn’t like, and guess what, I ended up not liking them, despite giving them a chance… Everything is so BORING!
I can barely bring myself to play WoW and only play for trading post mounts or playing through a zone a billionth time I feel nostalgic for.
I guess it is only a good thing that I am starting to focus on digital art now, since I am getting better.
You have to play games with a different sense of purpose. For me, I like to separate competition and just a willingness to play the game for what it is. I play single player games for plot and characters, games like WOW I dive straight in and I only have 2 goals to achieve and that is it.
I feel that way sometimes. The best way to get over that kick is just to take a break from games in general for a while. Give it a few days and relax your mind out.
Also don’t think of “I have to do this” think of it as “I would like to do this” and go from there.
I like wow because if I find a goal and complete it, I make another goal. I like animal crossing for the same reason. When I was playing the Sims when I was a kid, I would make goals to get my house up and to make sure my bills in the game were paid etc.
About the topic, as we grow older and life starts to be busy, I think sometimes we just get tired mentally. And playing games requires some kind of attention, it could be focusing on the lore/story of a game, or focusing in doing the right mechanic at the right moment. Sometimes it’s just better to not do an activity for some time - it can be hours or some days - and just try again later.
You said that now you are stating to focus on digital art, and I think this is the right way to handle this situation. Focusing on other stuff not related to gaming. You may have played so much in the past years that your mind just need to see other things for some time. If you don’t feel happy or satisfied after playing for some time, it’s okay to take a break, it’s okay to do other things.
I hope you find some happiness in doing other things other than gaming as well. And again, your art looks great!
I also noticed how genuinely angry I get when I play games, and I don’t mean gameplay stuff, but writing. WoW’s writing got so ATROCIOUS that it made me flesh out my own world more. I want to pursue writing and worldbuilding, narrative design, etc. I want to make a big comic someday.
For as garbage as WoW’s writing has become, I must thank it for being so bad that it made me want to do better out of pure spite.
The literal moment you start to feel this way is the time you just need to shut your computer down for maybe a week or two and not even go near it.
I’ve had this happen a couple of times I shut my computer down for about 2 weeks and went hiking in the mountains with my free time instead. Came back to the games I play with a refreshed outlook
Going by your original post, what is it that you look for in a fun game?
As Grimoire said, it’s good to take long breaks away from gaming when you start feeling like this - that burnout feeling, but also use this time to think about what you look for in a game and find one that meets that desire. After a break, if you go back to a game feeling the same way, it could be the end of your gaming interests. I used to have so many friends who were gamers and just stopped because of the lost of time or interest.
Going thru such a phase isn’t uncommon. I’ve been thru it too; I continue to game to this day (in my 40s) but my taste of games changed since I was a kid.
I went from enjoying games where it was just streamrolling enemies and collecting power-ups, to putting story and character development first (I still love hacking and slashing my way thru, though).
I’ve also expanded the genres and titles/IPs I’m into. Western games have gotten stale for me; so much focus on PvP, FPS, while WRPGs usually have good stories but such slow combat. Hence, why I turn more to the Asian variants nowadays.
