It’s been happening for awhile… but it usually ends up fixing itself. I press play, and nothing happens. The game will be in the background in task manager but it won’t physically launch. Any ideas?

It’s a nasty one indeed.
Simpler steps would be:
- Kill WoW.exe via Task Manager.
- Kill Battle.net via Task Manager as well.
- Fire up Battenet app with Right Click → Run as Administrator.
- Launch WoW.
More complex steps would include all of the above, but first delete WoW and re-install it. I doubt WoW Repair tool would even do anything.
Run Windows driver update scan as well while you at it.
Such issue can happen to any app, and there is no like “one size fits all” type of solution.

I’ve noticed this happens from time to time. I think it might be when the client is updating, but I haven’t really looked into it.
You could try launching directly from the .exe (rather than going through the BNet client).
