I was wondering after about 30 playing hours of vanilla over the weekend.
Why can we not play what version of the game we want to? Log onto Blizzard, from drop down menu pick, Vanilla, BC, or Wotlk or so on.
In fact, why not on the same server as the current live version? So if I am a mage and try to put on plate gear, the gear is red to me; likewise, if I am playing BC all my higher gear would be red to me and I could not go to higher level areas.
I hope it should go without saying we cannot pick the patch. If I choose to play BC I would automatically play latest patch, in this case patch 2.4.3. Unfortunately, I guess I assume to much. We should have been playing vanilla patch 1.12.2 and I see we were not. I have no idea why we were not. I thought the point of patches was more than just added content, they are bug fixes as well. So if that is true why weren’t we playing vanilla 1.12.2?
I will guess many of you will say that is to much for Blizzard severs. That is not true. Diablo III had a portal to step into and we got to play original Diablo I. Maybe that is the answer. Portals in the live game just like Battleground portals to the latest patch of previous versions. I mean it would only be like 8 portals total.
If we go to dungeon finder and see there is a raid for something in Cataclysm we sign up, step into the Cat portal, change gear and off we go.
The devs took the code and data from a backup version of 1.12 that they found, and they made it work with the modern WoW framework. This was to be able to take advantage of current security and communication features.
Hence, 1.13.x was born. Not vanilla WoW, but Classic.
Any releases of other pre-Cata content, such as from TBC and Wrath, would be subjected to the same process.
I don’t want to play instanced Classic, thank you very much. This is actually much closer to the real thing, even if you’re not convinced because of the version number.
If I recall correctly the developers said that the goal was to have the modern client host and play the classic version of the game so you wouldn’t have to launch a whole other client.
That’s probably still the goal and might even come around someday; however, that’s not today.
I feel like they would add a server list at the top of the realm list “Modern” and “Classic” and you’d just pick the version and server for the game you wish to play.
They will not do that. They keep metrics on which version of WoW you log into using the pulldown method. This is per Ysthiens, former CM (when he was still here).
You don’t seem to understand. Let me clarify. When you launch classic you’re launching a branched, or forked, version of 8.2. They aren’t running under the same umbrella as the code is not merged. You’re loading a whole other client that is located in he _classic_ folder within your warcraft directory.
They would still be able to track all that if the codebases were merged.
I understand that perfectly, what I didn’t understand is that you thought that the devs ever said they’d do anything differently. They didn’t! Modern WoW and Classic are two different beasts. We’re talking about the server client, so that Classic can be accessed like all the other current Blizzard games and take advantage of its modern security, etc.
We’ve got, what? 7 Expansion packs out now? And you’re asking, for each and every expansion to get 1-2 servers tied to each game for each area (US/EU/OCE, etc.) As well as monitoring for all 8 Versions of the xpacs and classic? if you really want to play a separate xpac only, go find a private server. it’s a miracle we even got classic back.
I was just offering ideas on playing different versions of our game, which is kind of what we are doing going back to classic?
I do not want to play on private servers. I want to play on Blizzard servers where I feel like there is no hacking or cheating and the game is fair for everyone. I also want to be where there is potentially millions of players.
I see what Shalean is saying. I did not think it would be that difficult to monitor those servers. Let us say there are 100 servers world wide right now. We would still have 100; however, 30 would be dedicated to the other xpacs (example numbers). If this brings millions back, then more servers could be opened.
Please remember, I am going to be playing no matter what happens (excluding cancer, jealous husband bullet, car crash). I have played, been addicted on and off, since 2005. I only started a subscription again because of classic. I paid 6 months Friday. I really do not want to get addicted again, but I sure loved the classic days up to BC. Once the game got dumbed down I was not happy and ended up quitting.
