Game Runs, But Screen is Frozen

Hi, just a question is it me or am I the only person here that getting this bug. For some reason recently every time I play the game within a hour of starting it my window for WoW would completely freeze. I can hear the game is still running normally but I can’t do anything cuz the window is frozen. Everything out of the window like my desktop seem to be fine. I’ve check hardware temps, reinstalled the game, disabled the addon, and even uninstalled the graphic driver. At this rate I’m thinking of reinstalling OS at this point!! My other computer seem to have no issue with the game. I have a Nividia 2080, and on a window 10. Anybody got idea what going on

Hello, I had this same issue tonight, and just posted an update at another forum post. The solution for me: After having 10-15 issues tonight with random freezes, I just turned off MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner, following the advise from a blue in the forum, for a player that had similar issues in 2019. Played the game for 3 hours and no more issues. Going to test more tomorrow.

I am also having this same issue, after dealing with what feels like 20 freezes I turned off Rivatuner and it’s been 30 minutes without a freeze so far. Hoping it was just that and not MSI Afterburner itself. I need it because of a faulty GPU which makes my fans stay off.

Lost power while at work.
When I started it back up windows 10 did a update.
Maybe ? Turn off and restart computer.

Hey. Thanks for the suggestion ! Tuning off MSI Afterburner seem to have worked. Fingers crossed, but I’ve been playing for 2 hours now and haven’t had a issue. It funny how this is not a well documented issue. I didn’t find the post until you mention it. Appreciate the help !!

im having the same issue maybe its the new windows update? gonna try now to play without riva and afterburner.

It has to be Rivatuner. I turned it off and I’m not freezing anymore. Also, I was having issues with my GPU heating up to around 52c while in game just sitting around… with Rivatuner off I am back to 39-44c even while in raid. Not having issues with only using afterburner.

I can confirm that Rivatuner was the issue with my freezing. What is odd to me though, I have used Rivatuner with classic wow since release without any issues. The issues just happened literally overnight. Thankfully Afterburner can still be used.

I don’t have riva tuner and I’ve had 2 instances where this has happened since the new patch where my screen freezes and both my monitors actually shut off and come back on in a few seconds. Only happens in wow and I’ve been unable to recreate it in any other game and wow has had zero issues before that patch.

No clue what they did but it can be very jarring.

Thank you all, disabling RTSS seemed to fix it for me too. I’ve had MSI Afterburner running over an hour at this point with no issues, but it was crashing every 15-30 minutes with RTSS up the last few days.

You can still use afterburner (or i am able to at least). Just go and turn off rivatuner or if it keep automatically turning on, uninstall it, rivatuner seems to be the real issue.

This was an issue a year or two ago for a lot of people with rivatuner. Seems only to be an issue with WOW though.

Same issue here.
I Was running for many years without a hitch when all of a sudden a few days ago, I started to get freezing. I excluded wow from RTSS and for sure it resolved the issue.
I am triggered though because I am so used to having my stats up on screen.
Blizzard or MSI, please fix the issue. Could be a windows update that caused this as well.
Who knows.
So for anyone that is getting random freezes with graphics and sound stays working in the background, disable MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner.

Actually you can just disable or uninstall RivaTuner and it should fix it. I left MSI Afterburner running and the game hasn’t acted up since I uninstalled RivaTuner.

So i been getting this recently as well, it seems all of a sudden MSI Afterburner overlay just randomly drops off, i have to restart RTSS to get my overlay details.

It is also the link to why my game is just…randomly stuck.

I did a clean reinstall of MSI Afterburner as well, but no luck.

With that said, i’ve used it all the way back since Legion…with no issues…so something recently has buggered it up.

I recently started using MSI afterburner and have started running into the same freezing problem occasionally. Can hear game sounds but screen freezes. Even happens while running no OC on msi afterburner.

I just had this happen for the first time on Saturday, and I’ve been using MSI Afterburner and RTSS for years. Haven’t updated anything at all in a few months either. Since then it’s happened 6 additional times, usually while in instance combat. GPU isn’t even being overclocked by Afterburner.

I’m thinking I may just need to disable the OSD for WoW specifically.
