Game Recommendation for Battleground Enthusiasts: UT99

Hello to fellow Battleground lovers, rated or not.
I’d like to recommend a game to you all, since, in hindsight, it’s proven to be very useful for my understanding of Battlegrounds.
In a sense, it’s THE game that predated, and perhaps even inspired them.

Unreal Tournament (1999)
It’s finally available for free - officially approved by the company (Epic) on OldUnreal.

WHY should you play it?
It’s an FPS that’s very mechanically raw – No Fortnite building etc.
You have Capture the Flag, DeathMatch, Control, etc…
Sounds familiar? WoW battlegrounds are based on these archetypes, of course.
I’ve played Unreal Tournament (1999, 2004, 2007, 2014 pre-Alpha) since I was a kid, before WoW, and I’d definitely say that game knowledge between these two overlaps.
Strategic thinking, focus targeting, communicating, setting goals throughout sessions.

If you’ve played it before, I’d love to hear your experiences as they may encourage others to find games, teach, and transfer skills.
If you haven’t, I’d suggest you give it a try. It’s fun besides, and may prove useful in getting you to think about battleground map objectives from a cross-genre strategic perspective. It’s easy to get lost in the WoW gameplay (and zerg mid), but having more general experience in strategizing, leading and communicating in these different modes will make you a better Random, Epic, Rated and Battleground Blitz player!

GL HF out there

Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 were the first online games I played when I was 12 or 13 back in '99/2000. My older brother let me tag along when he played with his friends.

This post is giving me some serious Millennial nostalgia.

Played this with friends on lan on the school computers until we got kicked out. The game was og baller for sure. Don’t think I’d get past the graphics now

I’m 25. It was questionable whether I should have played UT99 so young, but it was certainly formative. My father introduced me to DOOM, and UT was one of the games I’d play every day after school, before I could really think strategically… But it was fun. I then once saw it installed at a computers summer school and immediately started playing and garnering an audience. Then everybody played it until we were told to get off it lol
Today, I understand this is where things like CTF and the Announcer basically comes from.
I’m very glad that it was a part of my early gaming repertoire…

That’s where OldUnreal and their linked communities come in. They use the Editor, Unreal Engine, etc.
You have all sorts of packages to download, from new graphics and models to game modes and weapons
Space is the limit!

There was no feeling quite like carrying the flag in CTF while the entire enemy team tried to chase you down. Having a rocket launcher helped.

Is this like WoW boomer bait? Unreal < Tribes

CtF will always be the ultimate game mode

I guess I am proof that generation =/= enjoyment of great Classics

Regardless, playing different games and genres (and not just classes/specs/modes) can help one’s understanding of PvP mechanics a great deal.
It’s also a great way for the Studio to come up with new modes

This is a name I haven’t heard in a long time…

Millennial? That’s it? I’ll make you feel better by saying that I remember playing Asteroids on Atari in the early 80’s.
