Game Is Running, but it really isn't

So this is a problem I’ve been having for well over a month now, and I know i’m not the only one. Clicking the “Play” button for WoW and even Overwatch results in a “Game Is Running” display on the launcher, but the game itself does not launch, or takes 10+ minutes to launch. There’s no open processes for the games being launched, just for the Blizzard Launcher, and closing does absolutely nothing because when it’s reopened, it still says “Game is Playing.” I know this has been an issue for a while, so is Blizzard going to just ignore this? And does anyone have a fix for the issue? I’d rather not waste my time restarting my computer every time I want to play WoW.

That is usually caused by another program interfering. Lets start with a selective startup. If this fixes the issue going to have to enable the programs one by one to see which one it is

Hi Fysus, I am having pretty much the same issue, all software is the same WOW has been running fine except for slow starts since the last big patch>? But it was playing fin! All I did was change the video card and install the new drivers? now everything, other games everything is still working great except WOW~? It IS launching! It is using system resources and I can see data going back and forth and I have to use task manager to shut it down! I just have NO Video or Sound! they had be disable all this stuff and it makes no difference! I still can’t play! maybe time to quit sending them money??? I am going to put the old video card back in and see what happens? I will post in here if it works? when I open the menu where is says play, its says next to it that it is already running? every time I hit play it starts another instance of the game? they tolled me its my Avast? or a few other things and I disabled them and no change! How can Avast be causing a problem after year’s of working fine??? NO! It must be the Video card, like its sending the WOW game to another monitor I don’t have or something? I will let you know what I find out with the old card, good luck with yours…

Because Avast, like all anti-virus programs, update all the time and can conflict with other programs. Especially online programs that also update frequently.

I’m having the EXACT same word for word problem except I was not experiencing slow starts. It was and has been working 100 percent fine for the last 4-5 years with NO issues in fact I was playing it before I shut down to install new card. Installed new graphics card and new drivers and now won’t launch. Just says Game is Running. It is visible in the task manager as running. Tried all options I could find online (deleting cache, deleting battle net cache, disabling all services and startup items, reinstalled old drivers, re-installing new drivers, resetting in game options (via the options > game settings box on battle.net app) restarting computer etc etc) and submitted a ticket as well. Everything they suggested in the live chat was either something id already tried or did not work the last thing suggested was to uninstall my antivirus and create a new admin account on the computer which is ridiculous because if disabling all services and starting the computer without antivirus active did not work why would uninstalling it work? ALL other blizzard games I have (overwatch, diablo III, destiny 2) and all games and apps on my computer function perfectly as normal. Only WoW. Did you ever try put the old video card back in? There are not too many posts about this that I could find so if youre reading this and have the same issue I do not think there is a fix for it. I am about to re-install game and if that does not work then its goodbye wow.

I have finally decided to upgrade my Radeon 6050 Graphics Card to an “On-Sale” RX580, I am now having this same issue. Hearthstone starts up, launches and runs fine, but WoW says “Game is Running” and I can’t find it anywhere. I have to shut it down via Task Manager. I have tried all the options BLUE POSTS have put out on this…has anyone found an actual answer to this issue?

First make sure the game is running in dx 11.

Select wow in the launcher
click the gear
click game setting
scroll down to wow
check the box additional command line augments
enter this -d3d11
click done try loading the game

Second lets go ahead and reset the game to default
cut and paste following folders to your desktop interface, WTF and cache test

OMG!! I’ve done so many things trying to get my WoW game to run, it’s been a week, and you did it!! You finally got it working again! Thank you so much!

I have this issue now: it takes minutes before the WoW window opens since I click “Play” even though it says “Game is running.”. I tried “-d3d11” as per Northernlite suggestion but no difference.
