Has there been any news on what web APIs we’ll get for classic (if any)?
Will there be a beta of those released at some point for us to explore before launch or will we just be waiting for release?
To be clear, I’m not talking about in game API for addons, I’m only referring to web API for things like an item database, character armory, etc. for external websites/apps.
I don’t expect the full features of the modern retail API of course. Armory didn’t quite exist, not as it is now for sure, but there was a way to get character, guild, and realm information on the forums at least (if I’m remembering correctly).
I’m sure that we’d be able to get some from wowhead for at least items but either way I was curious if Blizzard would be supporting anything officially from their end.
Also, wowhead doesn’t really have an API to work with even for items, it’s more just a linking system for tooltips.
The forums would list a character’s name, guild, and realm information, but there wasn’t even an proto-armory in Vanilla from what I can tell (or remember).
Compare with TBC forums: http://web.archive.org/web/20071116161418/http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=79170045&sid=1
I hope they will release some APIs for Classic. Technically the armory didn’t exist, but it might be nice if there was at least an API that could pull in a character’s items and stats for theorycrafting purposes (similar to what raidbots does with retail).
A public armory I don’t think should exist, but an API that would allow you to pull in items and stats for theorycrafting would be nice. Although you can work around it if it isn’t provided. Just isn’t as smooth and seamless as modern theorycrafting tools are.
We have a lot of capabilities now that we didn’t back then that would be nice to take advantage of, but on the other hand I think providing an authentic Classic experience is important. I’m not sure how Blizzard intends to balance the two.
