UPDATE: After extensive research and finally finding a log where they were used, it indeed only stacks up to 5 times and only appears to affect spell casts, not enchants or trinkets. Still useful, but not game-breaking. I knew I was missing something when I wrote this as I couldn’t have been the only one to think about this.
My guild was recently discussing Arcanite Dragonling (which I made a post about earlier) and then I really started thinking. For those who don’t know, Arcanite Dragonling applies a debuff to the target increasing Fire Damage Taken by 60 per stack, and as far as I know there is no limit to how high this debuff can stack aside from the 60-second duration of the dragonling. Well, since you can have multiple dragonlings out during a fight, they can very quickly stack a ridiculous amount of +Fire Damage Taken to where the boss is suddenly taking 1000+ extra fire damage.
Assuming this applies to any source of fire damage, you could have a tank with Essence of the Pure Flame equipped and have your melee all enchanted with Fiery Weapon. Every time the boss hits the tank, EotPF reflects over 1000 Fire damage and each Fiery Weapon proc would be for 1000+. Taking it the absolute extreme with the entire raid bringing ez-throw and other sources of Fire damage (like the leather gloves that proc fire damage), it seems like Arcanite Dragonlings could be used to absolutely cheese fights, yeah? If their AI wasn’t so awful, that is.
And if the AI is fixed in TBC, then all of these things would still apply and would it still be game-breaking?
I’m pretty sure the buffet just acts like +fire dmg from gear/spellpower. So anything that doesn’t have a scaling coefficient won’t benefit from it, and the things that do probably only have very low coefficients.
Could be wrong though, this is just what I have heard.
Do you have a source for this? The only guild on my server who actually uses them tells me there is no cap, but I can’t actually find a log of them using them (if I search for boss debuffs for Flame Buffet).
It appears to work with any source of fire damage, because the Arcanite Dragonling itself has a Fire Breath attack that gets amplified by its Flame Buffet. Not to mention, Flame Buffet itself deals damage, and each stack of Flame Buffet deals increased damage based on how many stacks the mob has, as seen in this video:
You can see the first Flame Buffet crits for 90 (base hit of 60), and the next Flame Buffet hits for 120, and the third hits for 180. So yeah it appears to be a straight up direct increase to any source of fire damage regardless of coefficients or base damage.
It affects anything that is affected by spellpower. If you happen to find a random weapon proc affected by spellpower, it would work on that too, I think. But I’m not sure if any such weapon exists in game. Maybe hand of rag?
