The main reason FF14 won is probably because consumers want more handsome anime dudes in their games and WoW doesn’t have enough and is suffering from audience capture (fans keep demanding more orcs even though most people think orcs are uggo and don’t want to play an MMO about them, also clearly don’t want to see a movie about them)
WoW needs to be more about handsome elves if it wants to win people back. Vanilla and TBC both had elves on the cover of the box. WotLK decided to put some ugly human on the box instead and sub growth slowed significantly. With Cata, consumers were fed up with having yet another expansion that didn’t have elves on the box. Game seem to be steadily declining until Legion, an expansion with an elf on the box cover, made everyone love WoW again
I wonder sometimes how many people actually play the games even if they have an account.
You’re right, it was nominated for “…Ongoing Game” which to me is an accolade unto itself. To me, subjectively, WoW just isn’t. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy playing it. I’ve been playing since MoP and it surprised me that the game basically changed rules every expansion and also left the last one in the dust, like a ghost town. FF14 uses it all. The developers acknowledge mistakes and work harder to fix what needs to be fixed.
Also I can only go so far in WoW. I don’t use addons. Though it’s frowned upon in ff14 I’m not so ignorant to not know they’re not used, just not widespread. If I slow down in a dungeon players wait or even come back for me. If I ask a question I’m answered. I only got better playing because these people had super patience. (If some didn’t, they hid it well)
Part of that community support are the fc’s (guilds here). Imagine a community in which you know each other’s real names, kids, real life, and get support from everyone, not frowned on online or other places for sharing personal info. I was asked to join an fc - I didn’t need to apply with a resume. I was just in a dungeon - early on when I still felt like I was half face-rolling (I wasn’t), but imagine my surprise!
Imagine being a super socially awkward person who always feels like she’s saying the wrong thing, or sharing to much, or doesn’t know how to quip quickly like everyone else despite having a sense of humor being accepted. Yeah, that feeling is awesome.
its 100% a dev created problem. Tho part of me feels like it was supposed to be player community fun that wasnt supposed to be taken too seriously.
Then people took it too seriously.
I don’t think it has ever had arguably equal population to WoW ever.
Some website made up a bunch of stats based on google searches and reddit posts and suddenly everyone thought it had millions of players based on nothing.
Despite that, if you have more active players, and they’re more active in every aspect of the game instead of divided - which one is more likely to draw in other players. I have an ongoing account with WoW just so it there if I feel like playing that day.
Irrelevant since FF14 and WoW play very differently. Most people don’t care how many players are AFK in sea town if they can’t stomach the first 50 levels.
shrug
I disagree
Yeah that sorta conflicts with what you say FFXIV does better imo.
Meh, I am fine with saying they probably have arguably similar populations.
But that cant be quantified in a way I am aware of.
Ok.
And how does that make FFXIV an objectively better game?
How is FFXIV > WoW unless you let your emotions and personal whims involved?
You mentioned it, that’s all. Maybe I interpreted it wrongly.
I didn’t realize there was an Oscar for Best Mmorpg. If there is might as well add Best Streamer, I could see Asmongold getting on stage, thanking blizzard etc…
I think you may have just misinterpreted what I said.
Some website made up some bogus statistics and suddenly everyone was shouting from the rooftops it had more or the same amount of players as WoW, and people have been repeating such since then. I was just pointing out it was likely never true.
Given the roster of games this year, what catagory would you nominate Dragonflight for?
Best Mediocre Expansion?
Looks great compared to BFA/SL… but probably C tier at best given all the amazing games in 2023.

got it, thx
Do you not recognize the irony in what you’re saying? You claim that all statistics are false anyway. Okay. But why would WoW have more players then? Why should you assume that when all information is false anyway? xD
I didnt see where you answered how FFXIV is objectively a better game. Could you highlight that?
I used the Oscars as the analogy to the best of my ability or what objectively is in any artist or entertainment industry.
Ok.
You used an example of a movie running away with a ton of awards.
What awards did FFXIV run away with , that would make it objectively better than WoW?
This year, they were only nominated, so they didn’t win anything.
However, last year, they won in the categories of “Best Ongoing Game” and “Best Community Support.”
ok - Anything I say at this point, if you haven’t understood what I’ve been trying to get at at this point, is going to be wrong - Tell me an example of what you think an objective point is about WoW being better and I’ll have a better starting point in which to talk with you and understand how you think.
I feel like we’re going in circles here
How does it conflic if you can explain so i can clear that up if i have to. English not my first language so i apologize
