Game Awards - ? Question

I mean asking here is just asking for biased answers generally. Of course a no life mythic tryhard raider whose living and breathing WoW 24/7 is going to think FFXIV is trash and obviously a sham that it “wins” a competition over WoW.

I bet if it was reversed and you went over there, you’d get similar results.

Diehard fans don’t want to admit the competition does things better…as if acknowledging your preferred game has flaws and/or isn’t the best is somehow a personal attack or judgement against you because you play it.

I’ve played both games. WoW for far longer and much more actively and largely because of inertia. I’ve spent literally thousands upon thousands of hours and have a very established account…and FFXIV has nothing on WoW when it comes to the most stimulating and “fun” content in the game in mythic+. When I actually thought it all through and made a rudimentary list of things and compared FFXIV and WoW to it…FFXIV won nearly all of them but it’s super hard to “give up” what I’ve “sunk” into WoW for literally almost 2 decades now and to be a relative newbie and not have the same comparable shinies, achievements, and just plain old knowledge and history with the game.

But I’d be lying if I said WoW wins on most every other front. FFXIV is a great game with a ton more lore and depth than people give it credit for (and acknowledging most WoW people are basically lobby players these days anyway and dont care for lore) and while it is an incredibly slow burn and demands a lot of investment from the player, if you like the RPG genre, you are likely to find a satisfying game if you’re able to divorce yourself from WoW.

And that ultimately is the rub. It’s easy for established players to come back to WoW and get into current content. There are copious fan sites and data galore to bring even the most neophyte up to speed and make the game as copy and paste braindead as it can be. Don’t need to understand your talents or spells…just trust what the spreadsheet dorks say and follow instructions (and maybe get a few addons to do the mental lifting for you) and you too can be more than a passable and even middling elite player

I think that is where WoW ultimately wins. They cater to the competitive and esport side of the MMO genre and this playerbase, for whatever unfathomable reason, has always fancied themselves among that crowd or at least capable of being in that crowd “if we really wanted to but we have lives of course”. You can dip out of WoW for any number of patches or even entire expansions and come back to a totally new game you’re basically a newbie in and in 1 weeks time, you too can be hitting the endgame hamster wheels and finding relative success with it.

Game awards are a thinly veiled infomercial.

Yep.

It’s truly astonishing how immature some WoW players can be. Imagine sitting next to a classmate, who scored well on a test and instead of praising them, you put them and their work down. But somehow, it’s not really surprising in this community.^^

Isn’t it amazing that a game, whose developers have been responding to player requests for years is nominated and sometimes even winning awards, while on the other hand, a game that consistently ignores its players and has plummeted its reputation isn’t even nominated anymore? That’s something no one could have foreseen. :scream:

Yeah, I’ve been skimming through it and it really is mostly a long collection of trailers with the occasional quick winner announcement. That said, it’s nice to see what the rest of the world is playing.

( I’m sort of sad how similar all the game trailers look … almost everything getting made looks like essentially just a variation of a first person or over-the-shoulder shooter )

It’s from 5 years ago, but see if this one doesn’t get you right in the feels.

Yeah, feels are there.

But I don’t decide which games to add to my “days off from WoW” library based on the feels of trailers. I’m looking for new gameplay that explores my other areas of interests WoW doesn’t include or explores entirely new territory.

Would I have even realized I was looking at a 4X game from that trailer?

( thought as a DLC trailer, it’s really aimed at hinting at what new mechanics were being added for the people who already had the game, which I guess I can successfully decipher from 1:35-1:40 alone )

Alright, how about this one? This game just released last week (and made the top 10 sellers on steam).

Anyway, there’s tons of games out there that aren’t 1p shooters.

what would you think WoW could possibly be nominated for? most clueless users? alzheimers/dementia friendly content?

there are like 200 absolute garbage indie games that can annihilate blizzard in every single category and obviously loads of games that beat them in every category combined

I noticed Visions of Mana… A new Mana Game is coming out!

Trials of Mana was fun to watch Walkthroughs of so I will get great enjoyment from the Walkthroughs of Visions of Mana so that I can find out the Plot.

I literally never hear FF14 ever talked about OUTSIDE of the forums… lol…

Armored Core 6 got absolutely robbed so I have no expectations of the game awards actually being any good.

I have XCOM2 to fill that niche in my library (assuming I’m interpreting the trailer as a squad tactics game correctly).

But, to relate this to my original post, was that trailer shown on the game awards show stream? I wasn’t giving it my full attention all the way through, but about the only unique-looking trailer I caught on it was World of Goo 2.

( edit: I wasn’t finished the stream when I posted this and there were a couple of trailers for survival and strategy games late in the stream)

The “Game Awards” are organized by a half-dozen publishers, who make both the nominating committee that selects the candidates, and appoints the judges who choose the winners.

So LOL no. The whole thing is just a scam being dressed up as an awards show.

Because nominations are done by 30 selected video game journalist orgs…which should immediately tell you that these nominations are most likely bought.

I hear it everywhere. I’m the only co worker that plays wow, rest play FF14/OSRS

Game awards? what is even there to vote on? I think like 5 games came out in the last 3 years that I can recall.

Yeah - I didn’t know they existed. I just happened to notice it come across my news feed, and mentioning Matthew McConaughey voicing something and coming on stage. Out of curiosity I just read through it and wondered why WoW wasn’t mentioned. First thought is that it was too old fashioned or something.

I’m just not to date on things like this or even streamers and thought I’d ask. Thanks for the answers and a decent discussion.

I’m always surprised that WOW doesn’t get more accolades for it’s music. This expansion alone has great music. Jake Lefkowitz killed it on Maruukai and many other scores for this xpac.

Literally everything is DF is a direct result of what players asked for…
Players asked for flight from day 1? Now you can.
Players asked for less FOMO with world quests? World quests on 3 day reset.
Players said the seasonal affixes and stagnant dungeons were boring? No seasonal affix with fresh dungeons every season.
Too much trash in raids? The raids now have barely any trash.
Crafting professions useless in the end game? Now you can craft endgame viable gear.
The list goes on and on.

Everything, obviously. This isn’t an award winning game anymore and really shouldn’t have been for many years.
