With each class having a class tree baseline, and a spec tree depending on your active specialization, I wonder if we’ll start to see new specs in the future instead of new classes.
I feel like with the amount of classes / specs in the game already it would be faster to develop & easier to balance a new spec that draws half its talent points from an already-existing talent tree, rather than developing a completely new class tree with 2+ new specs.
I know it’s come up before, but I’ve been thinking more about a holy-themed DPS caster for Priest and feel like it would be really cool if this came to pass. I really feel like holy/radiant as a damage type is under-represented in the game and would love to see it happen in some form.
I’m not expecting it or anything, I guess I just wanted to get my thoughts out there because I feel like there’s lots of ideas for new classes from the community that we’d like to see playable, but I don’t think we ever will unless they’re a spec to an already existing class instead of a class themselves.

I’ve been wanting Priest to get a fourth spec for ages. Exactly as you described. Holy ranged-caster damage in cloth gear. That honestly would make me so happy.
If they ended up giving ranged holy caster archetype to Paladins as a fourth spec, I would NOT be happy. I want a cloth wearing Holy spellcaster, with off healing/hybrid abilities.
Sure, Discipline Priest is basically that already, but not really. Then Shadow is cool for what it is, but it feels pretty strange in a way when you already have such powerful Holy magic at your disposal, which Retribution Paladins make use of offensively in melee. Holy ranged DPS caster just sounds so good.

It’s never gonna happen.
They’ve said multiple times they wish they had less specs among their classes.
Far more likely they’ll continue to release classes with one - two specs
Nope, Blizzard have voiced their intentions in keeping spec numbers down (see Evoker/DH).
The only reason Druid has a fourth spec is that it had two pre-existing roles within one spec.

to be honest. Shadow still feels like two specs and mutiple itterations shoved into one.
This spec alone can easily be divided into – “Shadow” & “Void”
Disc also feels like its needs more work on its identity.
THis class just needs a step back and relook at.
Still waiting for that expansion where all classes get reformed/revamped. Hopefully, with the absence of Borrow power, we can finally have evolution occurring with every class and their spec.
leaving that sadi. I wouldn’t mind a DPS spec witht just light theme.
Or maybe a hybrid of the two - Dark and light.
