It’s hyena pups, not gnolls.

I guess them not being sentient makes it a little better, people eat lamb after all o.o

Hyenas and lambs are sentient.

The sleeping pups are throw into various cauldrons.

Seems pretty normal to me. Five minutes after I started my new life as a dwarf I was handed a club and told to take care of those pesky troll children.
