Fullscreen frozen by Enhanced Sync

If you have updated to AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition (19.12.2), World of Warcraft under the fullscreen (windowed) mode would hang/freeze with sound continually playing when Enhanced Sync is on with DirectX 12. Disabling Enhanced Sync is currently the only workaround, and switching to DirectX 11 can also temporarily solve it as Enhanced Sync does not really work for WoW with DirectX 11.

Yep. I just updated my drivers this evening and I’m seeing the same issue. Changing back to DirectX11 stops the issue, but that’s not a fix. Damn AMD.

I don’t have other DirectX 12 games so I’m not sure about if it’s the fault by AMD or Blizzard. They both should pay attention on the stability of DirectX 12, however.

Okay now the issue is confirmed by AMD— Enhanced Sync is broken in 2020 Edition.

I have to turn global settings to standard and then erase the wow profile from the application every single time I open the game. Not even disabling everything works now. Also, if I try to launch the game from the radeon app it opens a Nov 22 version (which doesn’t connect to realms).

Thank you so much for this. I just updated mine and was trying to figure out for the life of me how to fix it without having to roll my drivers back. I had the exact same issue where the video would freeze but sounds still worked, I could even cast spells and move around while the video was frozen, just couldn’t tell what I was doing since my screen was froze. I just kept Alt+ tabbing out the game and then back in and that would unfreeze me for about 5 seconds and the freeze again.

really it enhanced sync amd broken dude, wtf amd.

It is fixed by 19.12.3.

Enhanced Sync was enabled automatically after I chose Gaming as my configuration. It was also hard to disable just the Enhanced Sync setting. I switched both the global setting and the one for WoW to Standard and that disabled Enhanced Sync. Sharing in case it helps.

I’ve been having massive issues with AMD and World of Warcraft, it’s definitely driver related, so far it’s only WoW that has the issues, it’s almost like the drivers can’t tell that wow is the forground window, huge lag, I get weird black bars for a few seconds, soft locks, hard locks, forced reboots, and other stuff that’s just too weird to explain. Enhanced Sync definitely makes it worse, but turning it off doesn’t make it all go away.

After a lot of trouble shooting, I played wow without the adrenaline software installed, and had no issues, they returned instantly after installing the software, and went away after uninstalling it. Driver version doesn’t seem to matter either, older drivers have the same effect.
