I was testing out Full Moon to see what the new damage numbers for it were like, and I noticed that Full Moon does Arcane damage. Why is it that New Moon and Half Moon both do Astral damage, yet Full Moon does Arcane. Did a little bit of research on Full Moon and found that this change happened back in 7.2.5 when it was still part of the artifact weapon. Is this the reason Full Moon has been rather lack luster since the 7.2.5 patch? Was this a mistake or was it intentional, and if so, why? Why is it that the first 2/3 of the ability do Astral, but the last 1/3 that does the most damage all of a sudden only use HALF of the spell class?
That shouldn’t really change much – The type of damage a spell deals doesn’t tend to result in the damage of a spell varying all that much. In the case of dual/multi-type spells, it calculates the damage for all types the spell has and chooses the highest damage one.
Example
Using an Astral spell that deals 1000 damage against a tauren with 2% nature resist, the arcane portion does 1000 damage, the nature portion does 980 damage, so it’d deal 1000 damage.
…then again, the Balance druid prepatch guide says that Starsurge and Starfall double-dip from our mastery, so maybe full moon being a pure arcane spell means it’s missing out on the double dipping?
Yeah, that was my main concern. It appears that the hardest hitting part of the New Moon talent isn’t taking advantage of the double dipping, thus reducing it’s overall damage. It’s only really a concern now because of things like Vision of Perfection that gives a mini Celestial Alignment/Incarnation Chosen of Elune. New Moon and Half Moon both take advantage of it, just like Starsurge and Starfall do because they are Astral damage, but not Full Moon. To me, this seems to be one of the reasons why Full Moon just hasn’t felt as powerful as it should.
Also keep in mind that with the way mastery works now, Full Moon only takes advantage of the mastery when in Lunar Eclipse. This reduces its effectiveness if cast during Solar Eclipse and would be a dps loss when cast during that phase.
